when i said it's stupid, it is because everyone at some point in their past has done something bad or dumb - and to have it drug back up 20+ years later, and getting crucified for it is the part that is stupid.

People in society today like being outraged. They have too much access to information with the ability to shout their own inconsequential opinions in an echo chamber and if that echo chamber gets big enough and loud enough, the news acts like it’s worth reporting. The size of those chambers has gotten progressively smaller in order to become newsworthy. Outrage is a hobby now and cancel culture gives people a purpose in an otherwise shiftless world. It also breeds contempt, which breeds anger and shouting back, which drives clicks, so news organizations are all too happy to drum up the division to make money.
