One narrative that broadcast and cable industry execs use to comfort themselves late at night while sipping bourbon is that cord cutting is the realm of the foolish youngster, and that as these folks age they'll suddenly see the wisdom in paying an arm and a leg for traditional cable. Nielsen, the TV ratings company that goes out of its way to tell the cable industry what it wants to hear, has been pushing this narrative hard lately; arguing that as the 18-to-34 demographic begins having children, the idea of giving Comcast $150 a month for huge bundles of awful channels is going to suddenly, somehow become appealing:

"We think behaviors could change once the so-called millennials start having families,” said Glenn B. Enoch, senior vice president for audience insights at Nielsen. New parents’ desire for better programming for their children will help drive them to cable, media executives have predicted.

Nielsen's confidence appears based entirely on the fact that Millennials with kids are slightly more likely to subscribe to cable than their childless counterparts, for now:

About 80 percent of millennials with their own homes who have started families subscribe to cable, and an additional 14 percent get television with an antenna, according to Nielsen. Only 6 percent have just broadband connected to a television set. Among childless millennials who live in their own homes, about 75 percent subscribe to cable television, while 13 percent live in so-called broadband-only homes.

Good for them. After having cable for 5yrs I cancelled. Charter / Cox and they suddenly offered me a magic deal of all the local channels and 10 of my choice for $40 w all the BS fees and taxes a month.

If I can address your point, the internet is the only thing keeping them from being Blockbuster. Adapt ot die, and they are defusing to adapt.

That's the type of thinking that kills an industry.

I haven't had cable for the last two years. However, my parents have literally every channel that DirecTV offers and live in the middle of nowhere with no internet. So I just use their login for HBOGo, Starz Play etc. sports wise you can find a stream literally anywhere, especially with Watch ESPN and Fox Sports Go.

If I didn't have access to those who knows if I would dish out for cable.

Are they kidding? I cut the cord because there's by far much more entertainment for my kids on the Roku.

They just don't get it. People simply don't want to stand for being nickle and dimed constantly for their entertainment dollar. Enough is enough. They need to figure out that until they start giving people a better experience for their money, people will flock to all other competition in droves. Unfortunately for us, that means that the Cable industry, with the help of Congress, will simply destroy all of their competition with regulations and throttling. If only we had a free market

Well, considering there are 7 year olds who know how to run Netflix and be satisfied, I think they are in for a rude awakening.

I don't get the cord cutters. They're always scrambling to watch sports, mooching off someone's HBO Go, etc. They're probably right, once these millennials grow up they'll pony up.

I can't ever see cutting the cord. I like to keep up with sports and news too much. I would like to see ala carte format as I don't give a shite about 80%+ of the channels, but for now it is what it is.

Well, now that Sling TV is offering ESPN by itself, and HBOGo is offering subscriptions independent of cable, I think chord cutting is getting more and more doable for the average person. I nearly cut mine a few months back, but the cable company cut so much off my bill that I ended up coming out ahead keeping it. I will still likely dump it after my contract runs out next year.

It's coming along I suppose. ESPN only goes so far for sports though.

I still like the convenience of all in one place for the main channels. If the content providers want to kill NFLX like they so badley do, they need to offer competitive streaming packages as well as better programming packages. For example, allow me to take $5 off my bill to remove all reality trash tv channels. Doesn't even need to be true ala carte, but buckets, smaller buckets than we have now. Similar to the add on buckets, such as "sports package" etc.

Because there totally isn't a kids-only section of Netflix or anything. How delusional can this guy be?

I know a 2 year old that can work Netflix like he designed it. Yeah, I'm sure he'll really need cable.

It's only after starting a family that I've started consuming online content heavily, for me, wife, and kids, and have considered cord-cutting. When you consider how cheap it is to have a few online subscriptions + a device with Kodi and all the shady add-ons, cable is really really expensive.

My 4-year-old doesn't know that cable, Netflix, Youtube, and Plex are separate things. She just knows that some of her shows come from my phone, and others come from the remote.

Increasingly, millennials don't have a pot to piss in nor a window to throw it out of.

Check out how many millennials you see walking down the highway. Media spins this as "millennials choose not to buy cars" like it's some kind of environmental statement.

They are the first generation in American history to digress, wealth-wise, from the previous generation.

Look for this to continue as America's march toward totalitarian socialism continues.

This is the sad truth.
