This is about as benign as I can make my point. It's impossible without sounding judgemental or like a total prick. But this observation is exactly what I've noticed as well.

I have never understood wanting to finance long term on a depreciating asset that has no deductible depreciation. That's a lot of cash to burn.

Why wouldn’t you just lease instead of paying that foolishness. Good grief

Is anybody offering mortgages for clapped-out camrys for people who can't afford a house?

I see the same thing in my neighborhood.

I really started to notice it in 2021/22 when wage inflation was sky rocketing. People were job hopping and getting big raises. We were giving huge raises to our people to get them to stay.

I think a lot of people overextended themselves thinking they would keep getting +10% raises and grow into their payments. I have to assume that between compensation normalizing and COL increases that many people have very tight budgets.

The first new vehicle I ever bought was a 2004 Chevy Silverado.

Payment was $234 a month.

Remember when the price of cars was just high because of Covid industrial disruptions?

I’ve only had a car payment for around 5 months in my entire life of almost 60 years. Everything else was cash and only did financing on one to get the principal price down, then just paid it off.

I've never bought a new car.

Hell, I may never buy another used car.

Y'all must live in some shitty neighborhoods if you're looking around each morning and wondering when the banks are going to repo your neighbors' cars or foreclose on their houses.

correct, I have no doubt a lot of people over extend themselves, and that’s their business, some people can actually afford it and aren’t paying those notes

I love how some on the OT cannot fathom that there are people who make a lot of money and buy expensive things with their high income.

It's not really this at all. I know what the median household income is in my CDP (which feeds the local school). I know I make more than that, have the advantage of a mortgage payment that's based on pre-2020 craziness, and utilize the local public schools (which are good). Given that and the proportion of families in the area who clearly live well above our standard (i.e. constant vacations, kids in private schools, two new $80k+ vehicles, etc.), I can only conclude that 1) many of those families are saving almost nothing; 2) more people are living on inheritance than I ever realized; or some combination of 1) and 2).
