The Atlantic: Why are we spending $1 billion new NOLA airport b/c it will sink into Ocean

By then, the city of New Orleans plans to open a brand new, “state-of-the-art” airport terminal. The $1 billion project is currently under construction across the runway from the existing hodgepodge of concourses. But building a new “world-class” terminal in this sinking city is no straightforward matter. It reveals the precariousness of the world in its current state—a world in which airports may be nearing extinction.
Less so, from the ground. At an average of four and a half feet above sea level, MSY is the second lowest elevation of any airport in the world, just above Amsterdam’s Schiphol. The low elevation of New Orleans, combined with easily overwhelmed pump systems and an elaborate system of levees, makes the area especially vulnerable to flooding. Meanwhile, the nearby coast is eroding at a staggering rate—roughly a football field’s worth every 100 minutes. Earlier this year, the New York Times reported that the the federal government is retiring place names by the dozens for islands and bays that have “simply ceased to exist.”
"Extrapolate this to entire airports suddenly rendered useless due to the unstoppable flows of a rising ocean."
"So why build a new, billion-dollar airport here? From an ecological perspective, the site is already doomed."
"CHRISTOPHER SCHABERG is the Dorothy Harrell Brown Distinguished Professor of English at Loyola University New Orleans and the author of The End of Airports."
Synopsis for those who are too lazy to read the entire article is the new New Orleans Airport is a collasal waste of money because climate change is causing rising sea levels coupled with Hurricanes spells doom for the new airport because it will soon be underwater

Printing the Atlantic is a colossal waste of money.

I love when English professors tell us about engineering

It may actually be a race to see if the New Orleans airport opens before it's knee deep in sand.
Ha ha no
The airport actually drains extremely well for being in "New Orleans" which it is not.

as it is, most of the MSY is reclaimed swamp, the runway 10 extension years ago was straight west into the swamp

Well this is silly.

frick that.
This self-important Loyola English professor needs to shut his fricking manpleaser and leave the science and engineering to people who are actually good at what they do. You know, working scientists and engineers versus fourth rate English professors in a dead end job at a third rate university.

hasnt there been no net loss of wetlands in LA over the past few years?
I seriously doubt it. I saw a presentation a few years ago with projections of loss and it was stunning.
The sources of silt are gone, even if the rivers are allowed to meander freely, the silt load from dams etc up stream has been reduced too much to stop the land loss down here.

Always talking about how much sea levels will rise. My question is: OK maybe, but the how much HAVE they risen in the past 10, 50, 100 years? Seems straight forward enough that any sea level rise advocate should know the answer, yet no one seems to know even an approximation.

pretty sure it'd sink into the Gulf long before an Ocean.

Well at least he's unbiased.

The real question is why are we building a new airport when there is one a bit larger that, with road access and amenities like parking and rental cars that works perfectly well on the other side of the runway.
Other than the fact that Federal Tax dollars were available no one would suggest this stupid shite. The one billion would have been better spent on light rail from the airport to New Orleans and if any money were left over extend it toward Baton Rouge.
