A combination of an unusually warm winter and an excess of nutrients from runoff has allowed a verdant mixture of algae and duckweed to flourish in the shallow lake.

Article

February was well above average but every other "cool" month was average or slightly below.

The problem with City Park Lake is that it wasn't dug deep enough. Why don't they just dig the bastard deeper?

I'd say this is starting to become one hell of an eyesore, and maybe we DO need to devote money to this project. Thoughts?

I already know that I know nothing about digging and city taxes, but I hope to learn from you fine folks.

They dug it deeper thirty plus years ago, but over the years with no maintenance it fills in.

The trouble with digging in South Louisiana is that you can hit water and ruin your dig site. Makes construction tough.

There are plans to, BRAF just needs the money.

They want to do a whole big cleanup, including introducing carp and other things to the ecosystem to control the algae.

they doubled the volume by digging a trench through the middle, they did not dig the entire lake deeper

There isn’t one lake. They dug more than a trench, but no the entire system was not made deeper, but it was all deeper than it is today due to all the runoff.

It will continue to fill in if not maintained, that’s nature.

With what we pay to BREC, and their cash reserves, there is zero reason any residents of this parish should pay ANY additional taxes for this project. It does need attention though.

Some smart guy should design a reservoir system where the lakes are now such that it can be used for recreation, etc. and rrtsin a large amount of water during a heavy rain event.

BREC could carry the water and get federal dollars to help defray expenses.

Eventually amenities could be added after the lake system is reinvented.

The lakes are one of the nicer areas in the city, you'd thing that BRAF could get someone to partner with them to clean it up. Can LSU get involved?

LSU will never approve spending a bunch of money on that with their budget issues.

But there are plans to include their science departments in helping/volunteering the cleanups and ecosystem development as part of student education thing.

This was being discussed in another thread yesterday. Below is the master plan for the lakes that I posted in that thread.

The Baton Rouge politicians are too busy stealing taxes than doing their jobs. The lakes are just a small indication of what's wrong.
