Thanksgiving revelation: My parents are living separate lives

Home for thanksgiving with my family and I’m watching my parents interact and it’s sad. My father (C-suite retired) is on a ton of non-profit boards and leaves early in the morning and my mom does her own thing. They don’t talk or even have each other’s schedule. It’s really sad.

It’s a danger most couples face when they make their children the centerpiece of the family for so many years. The kids grow up and move out, and you’re suddenly looking across the breakfast table at a stranger.

How do you know that they’re not happy with the arrangement? Marriage isn’t always butterflies and sugar.

This is not unusual.
I guess maybe just be happy that they are still married.

That sounds like you were screwed out of double
birthday parties and double Christmas Day presents.

2 weeks ago my dad was at a meeting. My mom thought it was in NYC. It was in Boston.

If this is what you consider "sad" you need to begin preparing yourself for a whole lot more sadness coming down the pipe.

Why don't you stop snitching on your old man? Maybe he won't call you a pussy for the first time in your life.

That’s it? Your mom got two northeast cities confused when your dad (who I’m presuming travels a bunch) mentioned his trip.

No...it was like “he’s in nyc I think. He didn’t tell me”

Serious question, is your mom in the beginning stages of dementia? If caught early, it can be stopped in its tracks.
Since you are home, do this... go through the refrigerator and cabinets after they go to bed and look for expired foods.
#1 early sign of dementia. I'm not talking about one or two items just slightly past expiration.
Please report back with results.

Eh...I travel a good bit for work and my wife forgets where I am. Miami, Atlanta, Denver... It’s all the same to her.

Nope. It’s more of a roommate situation.

It sounds like they have a routine that works for them. Live and let live.
