1. Secular Christmas
2. Thanksgiving
3. Fourth of July
4. Halloween
5. Easter

Anything after that is barely a holiday.

Most years I see more extended family at Thanksgiving. We usually all go to Branson together. Not doing that this year, so Christmas may be big in 2017.

Christmas is normally just immediate family and some friends from church. Lots of phone calls during the day though.

Do people actually pay attention to the "religious roots" of thanksgiving?

We got our "You should be thankful every day" sermon at my church yesterday, so yes, some Christians think of it that light.

Lots of older folks think of the Fourth of July as a Christian holiday too.

Perhaps intentionally due to its religious history.

What's the religious history? I thought it started with the settlers/native Americans thing?

If your land got stolen, you'd be indigenous too. It's 2017, we're all indigenous about what happened back then.

Easter is the forgetter bastard child in my mind.

My youngest loves Easter. She’s a candy/chocolate freak.

Every time I threaten my kids with “Santa’s watching” she chimes in “and the easter bunny!”

thanksgiving food is mediocre at best

My condolences to you for growing up in a family where there weren't a bunch of good cooks. I've eaten at friends' parents where that was the case.

They were not Southerners. They didn't know how to make cornbread dressing. They also looked forward to eating English peas with orange squash. I thought that stuff was sweet potatoes, so I got a whole bunch. Yuck! My first Thanksgiving with those Pennsylvanians was ruined by that concoction. My Montana born SIL's dressing with oysters was really bad too. You have to eat a little bit of everything as to not hurt feelings and to show your appreciation for their efforts.

You have any friends having a Misfits Thanksgiving? I did that a couple of years when I first moved to AZ and didn't have a SO to spend Thanksgiving with. It was fun. Just a bunch of friends eating and drinking that didn't go home for the holiday for whatever reason.

When I lived in Dallas, my Pennsylvania friend's parents always had a two or three of us that worked together over for a 2pm dinner and the 3 pm Cowboy game. Her mom made pumpkin pies, and filled a plate with food, for each of us to take home. She even went to the FedEx store for boxes to send the pies home in. Every year, mom always sent Christmas cookies back with me to give all of the same people from work.

All of this and the fact that you are not obligated to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on gifts that nobody really gives a shite about.

Thanksgiving is what Christmas should be. (maybe throw in some Jesus)

One of my favorite Thanksgivings was going out in Old Town Wed night and drinking way too much, waking up Thursday and going to the Wrigley Mansion for their Thanksgiving Buffet, then drinking at a friend's house where about 10 "AZ Orphans" gathered to eat, drink, and watch football.

I always say...if thanksgiving food was worth a shite it would get cooked more than once a year...but it doesn't...

I ask my wife to make it more often but for some reason she doesn't want to spend 12 hours making dinner.

, exactly. Thanksgiving food is great, but every damn plate is a chore. No one is going to invest the time to cook it outside of Thanksgiving/Christmas.
