In today's world, if I saw someone laying on the road, I'd keep going.

Louisiana now has constitutional carry. You should be utilizing your rights at this point.

Will get you killed if you aren't very good at using it, and knowing when to use it.

As stated earlier, OP might have gotten killed with his own gun. It sounds like he can actually fight so the odds might have been in his favor. When someone has the drop on you, a gun might be more of a liability than an asset.

Just something to think about. I'm a strong proponent of people carrying firearms when they posses the brain cells to do it. Just maintain awareness that having one isn't enough. You've got to be very well versed in when and how to use it for it to work.

Officer Fur Missile for the win!

the dumb thing was that the cops would only come at him one at a time, he'd kick one, that one would would go down and then another would come after him, rather than several attacking at once.

I'm not going to suggest vigilante justice is in order here. . . but, this dude doesn't deserve the legal system punishment.

Would you say the suspect was a coward?

No. Did he show fear? All evil people are not cowards. We have words to describe various forms of evil, words like “murderer”, “rapist”, “criminal”. If a person decides to commit a violent act, whether for evil or good purposes, it is not cowardice to seek an advantage. The seeking of advantage is not the evil; it is the violence itself.

On drugs, out of his mind, violent psychopath, sucker punched in dark of night and when he had him, he reached for a gun. Do better my man.

Edited to add for the critical badasses laughing about and objectively siding with the criminal, the first thing you do is ensure the safety of your loved ones. Mission accomplished.

The second thing you do in a situation like this is fight to kill, or if not equipped proportionally, withdraw from the fight.

Park yourself in a dark part of the hood tonight pretending to look for drugs and give it a go.

Thanks brother. I saw a few people asking about where it happened and where it all finished so i'll just respond here and hope everyone who asked can see it.

As far as your question goes though, I've trained BJJ for about 5 years now and it really came in handy. He had a jacket on so the use of a collar tie, which essentially was a lapel grip, really limited his ability to hit me. It created some good distance for me to be able to protect my face and jaw area. I also train with a lot of MMA guys so getting hit wasn't an entirely new experience. Don't get me wrong, getting punched in the face still hurts no matter how many times it happens but I was able to take it and still immediately go into a fighting position, which I think really caught him off guard. I basically rolled with the hit but never went down or lost balance. I just remember thinking to myself "this dude really just hit me." My wife told me after that she saw the hit happen and was obviously worried but that when I turned back, my face didn't look afraid nor angry, just laser beam focused. I'm glad he clipped me right under the left eye instead of the jaw though. Could've been way worse. All in all, I felt my training allowed me to have a clear head and something to fall back on. I always approach my jiu jitsu like Jocko talks about. If I can create distance, perfect. You can't hurt me from range but if you get close, I have some skills to make it hard on you to land more shots on me. It also allowed me not to freeze up and create a chance for my wife to escape. I definitely feel that my training allowed me to prevent further injury to myself and others. Would I have loved to get him to the ground for a choke or something of that nature? Absolutely. I just didn't want to chance it, given I already had suspicion he may be armed, by closing the distance when I had created that distance to protect myself in the first place.

As far as where it was, the initial confrontation happened about 50 yards from the E Broussard/Kaliste Saloom roundabout. It was along that small stretch of woodline between the roundabout and the Market Eatz. The end of the chase happened in Duson off of ridge road by Marigny and Colorado. If you're familiar, it's a shithole area. That's where he assaulted the old woman and the dog got him.
