His No Reservations episode in Missouri with Daniel Woodrell and his Parts Unknown episode in West Virginia should be watched by anyone who thinks Bourdain was nothing more than a pretentious elite.
Yep. His No Reservations Cajun Country episode too.

Hey, you idiot junkie, here's a quote from Johnny Rotten: "If you don't want to be a pop star, simply stop being a pop star...."

I think everyone assumed he killed himself because of his girlfriend.

Trashy.
Fame saved him from being a meth addict living in a trailer park.

All of this right here. He was a middling chef of a steak frites place (which he admitted). He was a surprisingly compelling writer, but it’s been clear for a long time that he was a miserable person who seemed oblivious to his good fortune and he went out about like you’d expect, with a squeal and a whimper.

He's a Vassar alum. Same college my Mother graduated valedictorian.

Am I missing something about why some of you are so angry at Bourdain? The vitriolic responses have been really, really bizarre.
He didn't like Trump so of course this board goes scorched earth on Bourdain.
I always liked his shows for what they were and would have loved to hang out with him for a day eating and drinking.

He did a lot of good for a lot of small restaurants and unknown chefs. Not sure why people hate him so much, you're probably right though because he didn't like Trump.

Seems like he had the greatest job in the world. Did a lot for restaurants.

Who cares? He's dead.

“I hate my fans, too. I hate being famous. I hate my job,” Bourdain wrote to his estranged wife Ottavia Busia-Bourdain, with whom he remained a close confidant even after their separation in 2016. “I am lonely and living in constant uncertainty.”
This dude was such a douchebag fgt. Why so many people remember him fondly is beyond me. He’s your typical ex-heroin-addict-as-a-social-identity restaurant worker burnout. Literally no redeeming qualities about him or his personality

I’ll never understand successful men like Bourdain/Depp attaching themselves to obvious wacko whores and letting these whores destroy them.

Hate is bad. Only weak people hate. Including Bourdain and all of you haters on here.

Yeah, I didn't think anyone thought Bourdain derived his fame from his actual cooking skills. He made good food at this restaurant but nothing special. And like you said, he admitted it.
What made him famous was his writing and his sense of adventure. He admired Hunter S. Thompson and probably thought of his ambition as being a writer rather than a chef.
As far as his "I hate my fans" text, it barely registers for me as anything noteworthy. These were private text exchanges between him and his cheating girlfriend. People get morbidly depressed in such situations and say things that they wouldn't say in public.
I don't know how many tell-all biographies of famous celebrities I have read in which there were passages stating that they held contempt for (at least some of) their fans.
That West Virginia episode of Parts Unknown is quality programming. I don't know any other food adventurer, coastal elite who would go out of his way to attend a high school football game in middle American and enjoy himself. He seemed to be open and receptive to people of all walks of life.
