LA resident. Went to visit friends in Houston 10 yrs back and was mad as can be about what I paid for my smaller house in LA along with state tax. 10 years later after learning all the details my thoughts have changed. S. LA real estate is dirt cheap compared to other areas. Even Shreveport prices are higher than BR and surrounding areas.

Not trying to be confrontational. I just know a lot about their bond history. For anyone wondering, a place like Tyler who is around 75% Republican as a base hasnt defeated a school bond in forever. Just the way it goes over here.

I’m hardcore Republican and vote early and often against 90% of school bonds. I voted for one because it failed 2x before and the final one stripped all the Admin, sports, and bells and whistles and just built 2 elementary schools.

I find Texas Republicans to be very hypocritical and large government when it comes to bonds.

I'd you have a high income and kids TX is awesome, I have calculated what income tax in LA and private schools would cost and we are coming out way ahead in Katy. Other benefit is I bought a house in the older area of Cinco in Katy where the tax rate is 2.6%, while the new development out west the rates are double that. I have that option to pay less which is nice.

I don't think you should feel bad for a bond. While taxation is a dirty word, there's a reason why Texas tried to stay ahead of the curve. In the end, cellular, cable and internet increases have out paced bonds if we look at it. People just pay that without hesitation

Tyler Tx way too small and I got tired of having to drive a county over for booze. And of course it changed the last year I was in town.

Exactly. It's laughable how some people seem to think that roads and infrastructure can be paid for out of the ether.

Plus the tolls if you live around Houston. I spent at least $100 or month in tolls.

High property taxes is one reason I wont move back to TX.
I live in a comparable priced house and my taxes are $2800/yr.
Oh and I live in FL with no state income taxes and 7% sales tax and A rated public schools.

People who always tout the ‘no state income tax’ almost always fail to realize this .

Eh, it's not always so simple. TN has no state income tax but the cost of living is about the same is Alabama. The quality is much higher though.

The answer is usually the state government sucks and just grabs every percent it can.

There's no state income tax so they make up for it with high property taxes, still better than La.

My Escrow account is $2,300.00 a month, $1,200 of it goes to the mortgage and the rest taxes/insurance. I bought my home 17 years ago when interest rates were low.

It is what it is but we have top notch schools, no crime, all the infrastructure is new etc etc etc

Yes, if not there wouldn't be any.

If you can show your land is used for Ag or livestock you get an exemption, it's Texas son.

Absolutely. F anyone who thinks the government deserves even a penny more of our tax money for any reason. Those assholes already have more than enough

Overall taxes are still lower than Louisiana. It's like 1% so roughly 1k per year if you make 100k. Texas is a much more functional state though.

Louisiana’s dysfunction isn’t due to the tax structure. It’s because we keep electing and re-electing corrupt, shitty people who serve in a system that is rife with abuse and corruption. And the voters keep accepting it.

Property tax reform passed just a week ago

Let’s see if this changes anything. Robinhood laws are what caused the high taxes. The “rich” school districts give up $ to the “poor” districts unless they have a recent bond. This caused everyone to go pass bonds and build new schools so they could keep their $. They also raise the tax rate with every bond passed. It’s a vicious cycle.
