Whataburger is high end traditional fast food. In and Out and Shake Shack, to me, are somewhat fast casual (Shake Shack is legit fast casual).

I don't think any of them is "much better" than the others. In n out and shake shack are super similar old school, small patty burgers while whataburger is bigger. They're all the same quality though.
Shake shack uses frozen ore Ida fries though.

I've only been to shake shack once but I'm not sure I get the love. The burger was OK but the fries not good, not good at all. Whataburger is way better than shake shack.

Whataburger will go down hill now on the service side imho (just like Popeyes did back in the day). The difference, Popeye's still has a quality product that can overcome super shitty service. Whataburger is a good burger, but when/if service declines, it isn't a good enough product to overcome it.
FWIW, In n Out is a pretty damn good burger, but waaaay over-rated imho. Maybe it just doesn't live up to the hype in spite of it being a quality fast food burger. Oh yeah, frick their shitty fries.

In N Out is the most overrated fricking restaurant on the planet. It’s good, but it doesn’t sniff Whataburgers huge greasy nuts.
