well all flood protection systems need pumps to keep the protected side dry.

According to the article in the OP he didn't have seepage. Which if not, thats a hell of a aqua damn and worth every penny.

even if the soil is perfect clays, water still seeps through it(granted at a slower rate). and what about the rain. It isnt going to just not rain in his yard.

if he can prove (which i think he can in this case) that it saved the insurance company a ton of money, he should be able to bill the cost back to them (in my make believe common sense world)

They don't work that way. I had a tree that was about to fall on my house that I tried to get them to pay for removal. I was told "We don't pay for prevention".

Actual hazards that cause payouts are few and far between. But if everyone started putting up reimbursable mitigating? Good way for an insurance company to go broke.

If they made it reimbursable in the instance of a flood, it would be a smart move.

That's a nice wall you have there. Would be a shame for someone to put a knife through it.

That is one of the purposes behind deductibles. He already got a reduction in premiums in exchange for the deductible.

I agree with you, was just pointing out that if indeed he had no seepage, that was a really good dam.

I have no idea, and no way of knowing what "his" deductible is. What do you think it is?

Not if paid to purchase some expensive piece of equipment used to prevent damage. It should be recoverable against the insurer if paid to repair covered damage.

I guess if you put some posts in the ground to hold them in place and then came up with a way to seal them together, maybe?

Unless he had a flood policy, his homeowners insurance doesn't cover flood.

So he would have been SOL if he didn't have a flood policy. That claim would be denied over the phone on his regular insurance policy.

Dam, only $8500 to protect you from the nightmare of dealing with renovating after a major storm. Even with insurance it's a nightmare.

My health insurer subsidizes part of my gym membership. Fairly common thing.

Government only bails out those that don't have insurance and does no prevention. Definitely not those that have insurance and prevents it.
