Definitely hasn’t been my experience here in the lone star state. Moved from Wisconsin (great summers, horrific winters) to Texas about a decade ago and there’s definitely a curve to living here. Traffic can be terrible but that comes with any sizable metro and the summers are Satan’s arse crack hot but the spring season here is outstanding.

I spent the entire day at a festival in New Braunfels where there were no fights or shootings. Everyone was polite and cooperative. It’s changing as the town grows and someday the charm may be lost but right now it is great to live between major cities but experience small town life

Coming to this thread with many years of living in TX experience (and likely in future).
All true! Hill country very nice but full of people who are the product of them big city suburban bleached soul Texas cities. They are wealthy and that end game fills many of the valleys and troughs in the Texas way of thinking (ironically).
“Keep Austin WEIRD” is chock full of layers of this. What is identified as weird tells more about what is not weird in Texas. And authentic “weird” (using TX language) people dont see themselves, nor call themselves, as weird. So many layers.
Weird” is mostly non conformist Texans, with trust fund depth.
It drains my soul.
But it has commerce. Lots of it. Great place to start a career. Great place to maneuver a career.
My god does it have highways and byways. Wreaks of rat race. Full of time loss getting to and from.
Has pockets of very nice places to raise families.
It is an amplified brand that is essential to the brand itself. Look closer and you see what you saw. But look even closer and you find good things, especially career and family. Just have to bring own soul enriching vitamins to the over sized Texas flag waving spirit and the nice people who are rich and think they have arrived because their wealth managers, not souls, told them so.

Man, you are incredibly out of touch with reality if you think anything in Louisiana outweighs Texas. You either love poboys or can't live without ma-maw being down the street, or both.
Well #2 is out, I lived 2000 miles away from any family for the better part of a decade (because I felt like it, not because of a job or military). #1 is out because poboys are dumb as frick, and Texas seems more and more to try to have Louisiana cuisine.
I've just lived in both states. I think Texas is a much better state than Louisiana. Louisiana is a shite hole. I've said that many times. There's just nothing that redeeming about Texas that would get us to move there over actually nice places. Places that can, all at the same time, have great school systems while understanding growth and implement proper infrastructure, and also not be subjected to a poor power grid.
Texas is a fine state. It is not mecca. There are much better regions of the country. Three off the top of my head:
The Research Triangle
Salt Lake Valley
Treasure Valley
If I'm moving, it's not to a subpar region of the country that think they're shite doesn't stink as long as O&G isn't in the shitter.

To be fair. He didn't make that comparison, but I agree with the OP. Texas is overrated.

I agree. Texas is extremely overrated

I have no idea what is the best state to live in.
I do know the answer will vary drastically depending upon what you value in your own life.
That said, Texas is probably pretty high on the list of best state to live in for me. I think the only thing to keep me in Louisiana is the close proximity to family and friends.

Most of your gripes are eliminated if you have enough money.
Texas does suck as far as outside activities, but for being large cities, the cost of living is low, there’s a shite ton of jobs, and the taxes are low (yes compared to other large cities the taxes are low).
You’re talking to a Louisiana based message board, Texas has really good large cities and is close to home. Of course, if I didn’t have family and unlimited money, I’d move somewhere like a sick spot in Denver and ski all winter and play golf/hike/etc all summer.

Texas is an urban and geographical wasteland outside of the Hill Country and maybe some of the rural piney woods area I east Texas. The cities are full of arrogant posers and the drivers suck arse.

Texas is a 3rd world country and I don’t see why anyone thinks it is so great. I have friends in the rescue world and cities have tons of strays running loose and all shelters are stuffed full and are kill factories. If people there can’t provide basic care for their pets and be more responsible, I don’t trust they are good with anything.

It will be soon with all of the Muslims moving there. One of their Muslims committed a terrorist attack in New Orleans.

All three of those cities
My brother in Christ they are built out of concrete.
This whole melt feels like you hate Dallas and had to go to Houston a few times. I guess you’ve seen the entirety of the state.
Sorry not sorry you’re Catholic and don’t like that people have different views of the same God. To be fair, Texas near I-20 was like that before you showed up and I guess they didn’t know you were coming.
Here’s your plan:
1. Sell your house and quit your job.
2. Move (back) to Ohio, or to Boston, SF, NYC. You know, a more walkable city with better restaurants. Just don’t leave a corpse on the subway.
3. Be a better contributor to TD

If you can’t find what you’re looking for in Houston, there’s a good chance it doesn’t exist.
