quote:I had always figured that teacher pay was so low in the south (not including Texas and Florida) because the they spent much less, but when I looked up the spending and teacher salaries by state, there is not near as much variation in the spending as there is in the salaries.
EBR spends $10,755.00 per student
Zachary $9,780.00 per student
Katy ISD $8,596.00 per student.
Cy_Fair spends $7,967.00 per student.
Starting teacher salary in Cy-Fair ISD is $53K with BS. EBR $44,500.00 with a BA degree,$48,400.00 with a PHD.
And even though the research shows that in general, students/families in the schools explain much more of the variation in school performance than the teachers themselves, but it's hard not to see such low salaries and think that this would have a pervasive impact on the quality of teachers a state can attract and retain.
So while raising the salaries of Louisiana teachers, isn't going to change the students, but it might at least attract and/or retain a few more teachers who could make some difference.

They have an ISD right? Those do wonders in communities that care.

I think it's combination both and you can throw in parent involvement while we are at it.
I'm going with:
1/3 genetics
1/3 parenting/home life
1/3 teacher/school combo

Yes, but it also depends on where you look. North Texas suburbs have a lot of incredible schools. But then Texas is only 37th in the nation in education according to US News. 33rd for Pre K to 12.
The good schools are really good, but there’s obviously a lot of horrendous ones to bring down the avaerage.
Because Texas doesn't have the same demographics as states in places like the east coast.

The same resources? You’ve got to be kidding me.. they have 27 million people. We have 4.5. Stop comparing us to Texas because we will NEVER be anything close to them. We’re in the Mississippi/Alabama/Arkansas boat.

The states have similar natural resources.
No they don't. Texas is well ahead of LA with the Permian Basin and Eagle Ford. LA has squandered what it had and there's not much on the horizon as far as new fields go.

Texas also has Texans and is Texas, so it has some problems to work out.

Are you serious??
Only thing Louisiana has in common with Texas is the Sabine River.

They became Texans, so that's questionable.

One protected it’s future (oil money invested in universities)
Texas didn't really intentionally do this. If I remember correctly the legislature wanted valuable land in east Texas which they took from the university system. In exchange, they gave them millions of (at the time) worthless acres out in West Texas. This was put in the state Constitution back in the late 1800's. Some 50 years later oil was discovered on the land and the university system ended up with one huge arse endowment fund.

Louisiana should let itsrlf be absorbed by Texas, taxed like Texas and be run by Texans. Schools, roads and infrastructure 10x better in every way.
and what are we going to do about the fact that Texas has 11% blacks, and LA has 32%?
You can't just slap a new pretty school off of Plank Rd and expect it to be better than before. That's not how it works. You can't make it better by putting better teachers in them either. When schools are good, doesn't matter where they are in this country, they are b/c of the parents.
