Handcuffing and arresting him was absurd. I understand concern given the current climate of school violence, but seriously this is taking it way too far.

It blows my mind that you truly believe this is staged. Nothing of it reeks staged at all to me. Every part of it has a very rational explanation.
Muslim kid who was in robotics club in middle school, won awards for things he'd built, and dreams of being an engineer builds a small digital clock in a pencil case from parts he has lying around. He's a freshman in high school and wants to impress his Engineering teacher so he brings it show them. He's a brown kid in a new school with a weird piece of electronics with him, and that doesn't sit well with people. Hilarity ensues.
It has a god damned power cord on it. If it were a bomb, it'd probably be the worst one ever. Hope he's not trying to blow people up on the move because you can just find a power outlet anywhere. There's no way that he could have genuinely just been proud to show someone something and craved validation from his peers moving into high school. No, it's a Muslim plot with Obama written all over. Just like when us white people got that Logan kid to the White House for standing up to bullies. I love a good Obama Muslim plot though because those are more exciting, right?
If his clock is shitty, you build a clock. How can you make fun of a 14 year old's attempt at designing electronics when you just made the design of TigerDroppings responsive within the last year or two 6 years after media queries made responsive design a thing? Is this not something you're proud of and work hard on? Did you make this site because of a long con New York Times piece plan or did you just want to build something because you had a skill and wanted to use it for something that people would enjoy? I really just can't believe that you of all people wouldn't understand what it's like to create something and want people to see it when you run a relatively popular website.
I just can't fathom the mental gymnastics it takes to somehow make everything some plot by Obama, liberals, or whatever other group that the person dislikes on the day.

Like I said, it's almost impressive how many hoops people will jump through to blame these sorts of things on Obama in some way no matter how absurd it may be.

Look, if the kid is that smart and it appears that his parents are intelligent also, they all had to know that would draw A LOT of attention. For those saying it doesn't look like a bomb, of course it doesn't look like one outside of the case, but it does look like a detonator, and it apparently functioned like a detonator when the timer sent a signal to whatever audio device he had it attached to activated, same way that signal could have activated something else more nefarious. Also behind something inside that case conceivably could have been explosives.
I think most of the reaction was appropriate until they took him from the school. It could have been handled there with LE involved, but LE probably should keep an eye on him just in case.

The case looks far larger in photos than it actually is, by the way. It's a relatively small pencil case. Again, this kid was in a Robotics club in middle school where he was given awards for his work. To his parents, this was likely just another little project he was tinkering with.
Also, you're saying that because he wired a shitty little speaker to it to make sound, it functions like a detonator. By that logic, every piece of electronics on Earth functions like a detonator. It's not some wild circuit magic to "sent a signal". It's basic boolean logic. If the signals meet a certain condition that results in "on" (or 1 or "true", if you rather those terms), a sound is played. It's as simple as a button press causing a 1 to be sent through an "AND" operation with the power from the source to the speaker. When pressed, true AND true obviously will result in a true for the speaker meaning a sound is played. Otherwise, nothing is playing until both conditions are met.
This is not some jihad detonation technology. We teach it to every person who takes Intro to EE courses. It's taught to every Computer Science major. This is something that any kid at that age with those interests would be proud to have done.
If this is the case, we should have national security seize the Arduino site for supplying both parts and circuit layouts for devices that function like detonators. I mean look at this one that detonates a "light bomb". While seemingly harmless, if you're too close it could hurt your eyes for like 30 seconds! It's one thing not to understand technology and even fear it, but this was just taking it a step too far.

Kids have been shot for waving fake guns with the bright orange barrel tip. Those look as much like real guns as this kids "clock" looks like a bomb while inside of its case. I understand everything that you are saying. I'm glad he's inquisitive and creative, but that doesn't mean he can scream fire in a movie theater to see what happens.

Same could be said for a simple backpack. Damn those parents for buying things that not only could have a bomb on the inside, but have been used as bombs in Boston.

I've concluded that the people screaming this was discrimination are the bigots, because that's where your mind jumped.
The reaction on the schools part was a result of federally mandated zero tolerance policies concerning threats of mass violence in school settings...the reaction of the police department was because the school called it in as a suspicious bomb like device, they in turn have to follow formal protocol in regards to detaining and questioning.
The race and religious practice of the kid was a huge coincidence, one that most of the sheep in here jumped all over. Where are the outcries for the kids getting expelled and arrested for drawing out acts of violence on paper...OMG HE'S JUST EXPRESSING HIS ARTISTIC SIDE.
