Teacher sent home some stuff about testing my kiddo for GT classes. Is there any downside to this? upside? Anybody have experiences they'd like to share with it?

I'm leaning towards not testing him for it because it seems like bullshite to me and I think it may do more harm for him to be isolated from his peers and stuck with the GT kids who, quite frankly, can be fricking weird.

Nah. He does pretty damn well in school, but I frankly wouldn't care if he isn't GT because the GT kids at my school are all doing pretty terribly in life/career.

We called it TAG. We didn't have specific classes (until High School and that was still just newspaper or something), their were just certain periods where the TAG teacher would pull us out of our regular class for "enrichment" or whatever.

I'd say it was a good experience.

Outside of Louisiana, some public schools can be pretty damn good. Saves me a lot of coin.

Very little but could be some. It depends what your school's gifted program is like. Keep in mind that Gifted is part of "special education" and therefore protected by law. Teachers can't use it against students.

my kids go to gifted one day a week for couple hours. Not enough to get isolated. The other gifted kids won't be just made of nerds and geeks. It's a good variety of kids.

One great positive for gifted in my school district is that "gifted" program students automatically get put into advanced classes in junior high.

I was in gifted classes. I don’t really see a downside. We didn’t have to deal with the retards.

I wasn’t in GT and I turned out to be a pretty damn productive member of society.

Yeah. I don't think being GT has anything to do with how productive one ends up being in life.

I agree. I was in GT and it just ensured I had a few “advanced” classes and honors classes. We did have a class just for us on ACT/SAT prep. I don’t see a downside to the program. Just like others though, some of us are doing great in life, others not so much.

Oh I didn't realize this was the "I wasn't in it so it doesn't add any value, oh and did I mention all the kids are weirdo losers" thread. Carry on.

It doesn't hurt bringing a gift to the person administering the gifted test.

Why would you turn down an opportunity for your kid to get challenged more academically? It is at the core of why we educate the population and you have the opportunity to get your kid better training.

Sounds like you pulled this shite off of some website or another parent that has a "My student at (insert school name) is a GREAT KID!" bumper sticker.

Being in gifted doesn't mean you're some math genius that's never talked to anybody. 95% of the time, they are simply students that, while sharper than average, just have better study habits and had better parental support from an early age. They mingle with geneal population socially, play sports, etc.

Dirty little secret...the classes aren't even that much more difficult.
