Real talk, this is my worry. If he doesn't get it and his peers do, is he going to feel stupid because that's kind of how it's framed.

He may also get the chance to start down the road of excelling academically. You have to let him try. If he does not qualify, you, as his dad, can easily ease him right past it.

It also does not mean he can't take honors and AP courses later. Scholarships are offered to kids that excel and put forth more effort. Trust me when I tell you it matters.

Gifted test are a money grab.

Pay me $400, I’ll give your kid a test and tell you he/she is gifted.

Can’t believe parents still fall for this racket.

News flash.....your kid isn’t gifted. He/she is just a non athletic weirdo.

I don't know, but your other comment was based on personal opinions or perceptions. Nothing on what gifted education is based on.

Also....if he gets it you can use it as a bragging point.

Everyone has that one friend or relative who brags about their kid all the fricking time.

If that person in your life's kid isn't in gifted but yours is....GAME ON

Mine was free 33 years ago as well. It was my teacher that suggested to my parents I get tested.

I was in GT and I turned out to be even more productive than you, so there's that....im assuming of course. But I'm pretty amazing, so it's easy to make the assumption.

Honestly, a well taught Honors class was better than GT for me. I ended up getting out of it around Junior year. It's not bad, but it's not great. And I'm sure it differed from school to school, but that's my experience.

Ours was free. If I had to pay $400 for a test, I’d just let my kids know they weren’t gifted by pointing out all the times they spilled drinks.

Those people are aggravating as hell too.

I do think the whole approach to gifted vs. "bright learners" or whatever they're called, is a little off. For instance, I was top 10 in my class and had all A's through HS, college, and my master's. But I wanted to be pushed more. Their needs to be an intermediate "not genius, but not retard" category.

It's free frickstick. Now if you're talking about the butthurt parents who appeal and get attorneys and psychologists involved, then yes.

Never played soccer in high school. Did play tennis, but never made it passed regionals. I was a walk-on in football.

A number of other GT kids at my school also played football at my high school. And two girls played collegiate volleyball.

I went on several field trips through gifted, including a week in Chicago in 7th grade. It was one of the top two field trips I've ever been on.
