I have never understood how automated cars are supposed to work with each other. There are all sorts of instances where 2 drivers think they have the right of way to do something where if both did it they would crash. Who overrides who?

Shrewd, yet practical decision, Paul. I’ve also noticed Penn guys tend to struggle to keep up on the tennis court and, well, no one has time for that!

Second, Tesla should update the control program to have the car come to a stop and turn on flashers if the driver ignores the warning more than five seconds.

It's longer than 5 seconds, but it does do this.

Actually disables the car and requires a restart.

Elon Musk is spread too thin. He's sending a Tesla into orbit while his Model 3 is woefully behind schedule. He's got too many irons in the fire.

Don't forget the solar roofs, the boring company, and now he's about to send satellites into space for a new broadband service he's starting.

Just test drove one last week. The autopilot is a feature that does not translate to a a self driving car. The two are different and there is a line. You have to pay attention even when it’s on.

It's too long then. In 10 seconds at 60 MPH, you've covered nearly 3 football fields. If danger is spotted at 500 feet, you're screwed.

Obviously, it didn't work in the OP crash.

CAD hasn't been in here to crow?

We should send the Sheriff over to CAD's house for a welfare check.

A few eggs will have to be cracked to make this work.

Get over your snowflake liberal "no one can get hurt mentality

If I personally experienced "7 out of 10" incidents where the Autopilot tried to steer me into that barrier...you know, I'd like to to think I'd learn something and take the fricking wheel when I was approaching it.

Apparently the driver set the autopilot to "Asian mode" shortly before impact

Well then it would’ve been going much slower

Well, your wife would be in the wrong just like this driver.

Autopilot doesn't absolve the driver of liability. It should be constantly monitored, like autopilot on a plane.

So the guy said 7/10 times he was approaching that same area, the car tried to run into the barrier, yet he still left it in autopilot at that area?

And that is the problem with driving. Not that you specifically, are a bad driver, but the other drivers on the road are the ones you have to deal and worry about.

I’m wiling to bet the rate of accidents per mile driven by an autonomous car is miniscule compared to one without.

You’ll never be able to engineer out every contingency. But it’s still a hell of a lot better than an idiot on their phone.
