KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Among the slate of new Tennessee laws that went into effect this month was a move to make it easier to own a pet raccoon.
The bill, sponsored by state Sen. Joey Hensley (R-Hohenwald) and state Rep. Kip Capley (R-Summertown), lifted the previously required permit fee of $31 to own a pet raccoon as long as the animal is obtained from a legal source, has been vaccinated; is non-native, was not captured from the wild, and a possession permit for the raccoon has been issued by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.

It remains illegal in Tennessee for a raccoon to be taken out of the wild and kept as a pet. The TWRA warns against having raccoons as pets on its website since they can carry diseases and can become territorial and aggressive when they reach sexual maturity.
State Rep. Jeremy Faison (R-Cosby) told News 2’s Tori Gessner during this year’s legislative session that many Tennesseans have expressed a desire to own a pet raccoon.

“You’d be surprised how many people in Tennessee have reached out and said, ‘We can’t wait for one of these. I’m so excited, thank you!’ Lots and lots. Hundreds, maybe thousands,” Faison said.

Everybody will be buying a coon now if only for the fancy hat.

Racoons must be obtained from a legal source and meet state requirements.

Nevermind.

Pretty sure that’s still frowned upon.
And it’s not worth it in the long run.

I suspect the true story is that the bill author wants to own a bunch of pet raccoons, so he's going to pretend that there's some big outcry across the state for pet raccoons in order to get his bill passed.

We need to start domesticating mother nature's bandits.

They really, really want one......but $31 is too steep of a price to put on owning their dream pet. That, or you're gonna have captive bred raccoons living with a bunch of broke arse people.
