You can't measure count hairs in metric

Good lord this thread reeks of low IQ. You know, the inferiority complex kind where one thinks they are the smartest in the crowd.
Y'all do realize that these "conversions" and their difficult feelings are relative to what you KNOW (i.e. imperial). Metric users have zero problem getting gnats arse accuracy. I would argue even more so than imperial users.
Base 2 imperial is quite possibly the dumbest form of measurement. Disregarding metric for a minute, base 10 imperial is far superior to base 2.
As a surveyor, I will argue that we should at minimum switch to base 10 imperial. Switching to metric is nearly economically/infrastructurally impossible at this point (though there are plenty of fields that already use it regularly). It would be relatively simple to switch to base 10 imperial.
Heck half of you in here are arguing how much better base 10 Fahrenheit is over Celsius and making this point for me. Its so much easier to measure and convert in base 10. Doesn't have to be Metric.

The reason why the US doesn't use metric is outlined in these responses, it is mostly rooted in American exceptionalism.
Now I believe in American exceptionalism but metric is simply better.
Everyone uses it every day in some form already, when is the last time you took .0007 oz of lipitor?
Metric nuts and bolts have been widely accepted for decades because of import cars.
In woodworking and metal fab, Imperial is maddening, especially if you have to be more accurate than 1/16.
When is the last time you bought a half-gallon of coke rather than a 2liter?
Back in the 70s, the move to start incorporating Metric was voluntary and it started being taught in school. However within 10 years that was abandoned, because of "cost" and "stubbornness".
Changing anything as substantial as weights and measurements takes time, decades or longer but had we continued down that path started in the 70s, we would be 50 years into that conversion. You cant switch over night but in long gradual steps would have made it possible.
Because of oil being sold mostly in barrels (imperial), it is unlikely to ever go away completely but if we switched to metric in measuring and weighting most ltems, I wouldn't complain except when setting my thermostat to 22.22C.

1. Changing to metric would carry a huge cost under the surface. Think about all the engineering documents, road signs, mile markers that would need to be updated if we swapped over. Not to mention the speedometer in every single car.
2. You would have to change how everyone thinks about speed while you make those changes. Think about trying to tech the not-so-intelligent basic fractions again?
3. The imperial standard does have its practical and pragmatic benefits. The number 12 for example can be divided by 2, 3, 4, and 6 which has its advantages in construction. Fractions like these are typically easier to deal with on a tape measure than .3333 ect.
Im sold. Keep it imperial.

Ask the metric people why we don't use metric time, and see their attitude shift.
Then ask why metric units are based on (nominal) imperial seconds.

depends on what you’re measuring
Saying a guy is 6 feet tall feels more intuitive than 1.8288 meters.
I definitely prefer Fagrenheit when talking about day to day temp. like the weather or an oven.

I remember being in grammar school, back in the 70's, them telling us the Metric system is going to take over in the US within the next decade...
Never happened...

Right. Our system is intuitive, more so than Celsius. There are certain areas where volume or distance could be better served with the metric system, but I like our temp nomenclature as it is more intuitive.

Europeans almost always express height in CM (eg 6-foot is 183cm) and weight in kilograms (180 pounds is 82 kilo or 82kg).

I agree with that, but Celsius is insanely useful for scientific temp.

The argument would be 36 inches vs 100 centimeters, for a yard vs a meter.
I use the metric system daily in medicine and it’s much better for measurements in general. Much more precise and more intuitive.
There isn’t really argument for sticking with the imperial system aside from stubbornness.

I use metric when I'm building stuff. It's just easier.
