My first house, I tried to fight the HOA President at the annual block party. I also asked the community watch commandant, no joke this is the title he introduced himself with, how much that pays? Needless to say, I was under a watchful eye.

I am not upset. If you don't like the rules laid out don't buy a house there. I don't understand how this is hard to figure out.

I have one here in south Florida. All the houses are on 1.5 to 2 acres and a lot of folks have horses. It’s 27 dollars a month which keeps the auto gate and front of neighborhood cut.
Old guy told me it was basically put in place to prevent a more encompassing busy body type of HOA from starting up. I’ve put up a fence around my perimeter , cut down some trees , and redid my pool area without even a second glance.

HOAs are fine for cookie cutter neighborhoods where there are Dozens of similar house for sale to protect property value, given a choice a buyer will want the one without a wrecked car next door. Get into high demand areas with more unique houses and it really doesn't matter that a neighbor has painted his house purple, it will have little effect on demand or value of other properties since availability is small and demand high.

$180 a year. Just to maintain some small common areas and pay for some basic insurance.

My infractions have been:
(1) car tire off driveway in grass
(2) garbage can in front of house, not on side
The next month when the management car came driving by and taking pictures, I called the Sheriffs department and reported a suspicious vehicle cruising...I haven't seen the company car since then

If we are talking about the boat being out where it is visible to people coming down the road, that's one thing, but there are a few homes in my neighborhood, that have extended the cover of their driveway where they put their boat under.. Where it is parked on side of their vehicles. Other people have their driveway extended into their backyard with an area for them to park their boat under.. Their gate opens and they can back up, hook up to their boat and pull out. But if you have it in your driveway to where you are parking your cars outside of your driveway or where it's not parked under anything, then I can see why that would be a problem.

My friend’s HOA in Vegas told him his tree (a small tree like 5-6 feet tall) in his front yard looked sickly and needed to be cut down or treated.
So he took a chainsaw and cut the tree down. Stump completely level to rest of his yard.
Then gets a citation from the HOA saying he didn’t remove the tree without proper HOA authorization.

What I like are the gated communities....the false sense of security of the people that live in them is astounding.
