my daughter was considering it
it's in the middle of nowhere...beautiful setting but not much to do
she wanted a school with more shite around it so she passed
it's a good school and yes expensive but almost all students are on scholarship or aid of some sort

Exactly. I guess some people aren't annoyed by trying to read something that looks like a text message written by a 14 year old girl. I notice when someone can or can't put a sentence together and appreciate the break when someone actually can write. There are more that can't than can.

My oldest son went to Sewanee. Big frat scene, terrific faculty, beautiful campus, but very remote and small town scene. Yes, he writes very well...ha

I know a couple of alums. Both are pretty good guys. One is about as normal as they come. One is a little arrogant, but I blame that more on his upbringing than his education.

I went to their rival...Sewanee is a well regarded school but it’s location at the top of a mountain would be an issue for me.
They have some unique traditions. The people are the top of the class (I think top 10%) get to wear capes / gowns to exams and around school, IIRC.

College administrator here that has worked with Sewanee people - good people.
Great school. Men are expected to wear coat and tie to class. Tenured faculty teach in regalia. Very different than a state school. They have some dual degree programs with Ivy League schools that are great deals (Look anther Engineering partnership with Columbia, for example - you spend 3 years at Sewanee and 1 year in NYC and receive degree from both places)
There is an SJW crowd at every school. But there's a lot of Old South there that is not in danger.

Don't let the sticker price shock you. They operate on a pretty good discount rate (60-65% off is what the average family pays).

Coat and tie is still a thing for class? I can’t inagine a kid these days dealing with that BS except on a rare occasion. I thought they were regalia for exam days primarily.

~45k which is about right for a quality small private liberal arts college.
The high quality small liberal arts schools tend to produce very well rounded graduates and emphasize writing and critical thinking. Grads tend to do well and it is a great preparation for a professional degree, especially a JD. Most class sizes are very small and few if any classes are taught by TAs.
The ones in the south tend to produce fiscal conservative/social liberal grads, but the social side is usually far from SJWs or leftist.
