Weather and weather alone would foreclose me from ever living there under any set of circumstances.

Search the travel board, this has been discussed many times with fantastic answers, and quite a few photographs of things to do and see

Wouldn't OP be more interested in more mundane things about every day life, as opposed to the tourist things?

My friends in Minneapolis tell me they cannot afford to raise the thermostat above 60F during the winter.

Sorry for the novel.

I moved to minneapolis 4 years ago with my wife. We're both from south louisiana, early 30's and live in Minneapolis proper.

The city is awesome. Endless things to do and the cost of living isn't very high for a city (it's comparable to new orleans). Top notch restaurants, great comedy and music scene, and has 4 major sports teams.

There are tons of parks and lakes and endless outdoor things to do. It has the second to most green space per capita next to denver.

There are hundreds of miles of dedicated bike lanes with 100 miles of a bike highway that goes all over the twin cities and to neighboring cities.

As for winter, you just have to embrace it. If you move here and decide not to do any winter activities and just bundle up and stay inside for 5 months of the year, you'll be miserable.

Things I do: fat biking (mountain biking in the snow with giant tires), broomball (hockey for ppl who can't skate with spongy shoes running on the ice), skiing.

I also bike to work year round, unless it's below -10 degrees. Biking and being out in the cold makes your body acclimate to it and it doesn't even feel cold. Now it's spring and 70 degrees feels hot as hell to me. The worst part of the winter to me is december when there is only 8 hours of daylight, but summer makes up for it with sunrise at 5am and sunset at 930pm.

Summers here are like no where else i've ever been. the city explodes when the weather gets nice. there are ppl everywhere.

As for people saying somalis, so what. There is a large somali population here. I haven't really had any negative interactions with any somali. It also means that there are a ton of great eastern african restaurants.

As for as making friends, it took a while. I was used to Lousiana ppl where it's easy to meet people. People from here don't really branch out from their core friends they made in highschool. I've been here 4 years and have a pretty good circle of friends, but it took some work, and the first year was isolating.

All in all, i say if you are interested in it, go for it. Don't be afraid of the cold because it isn't that bad. It's very comparable to denver or portland in terms of size and culture. It's a great city and I don't plan on leaving.

I am just trying to figure out why a bunch of Somalians live in as cold a place as Minnesota.

The somalia civil war of the 80's and 90's led to a ton of refugees.

I’ll second what LSUtwolves said about summers up here being incomparable to anywhere else. Their is something about the long, bitter winters that really make you appreciate the warm weather when you get it.

And you bike to work. You live in the North Loop neighborhood?

I lived in North Loop the first year and it was pretty nice, kind of douchey though. Nicer to visit the North Loop than live there. We bought a house in Longfellow where we live now.

I'm thinking of buying a condo in downtown east near the guthrie though.

Marvel bar is neat for the novelty concept of a speakeasy. As for fine dining, I’ll take Spoon and Stable (across the street) over Bachelor Farmer any day of the week.

I'm late to the conversation, so forgive the repetitiveness of other posts. I went to grad school at LSU from 93-97, then moved to Minnesota. Raised three kids here and like to stress that the education and the healthcare are among the top in the country. The food, music and arts scenes are robust. MSP is a hub for Delta, so travel is easier here than I ever experienced in Louisiana.

I used to defend the weather a little bit, but the polar vortex this past winter is tough to defend. But, we made it through. July and August in Minnesota are hot, green and popping. Fall is gorgeous. Hunting and fishing are robust.

I have long said that MN elects wrestlers, comedians and Michelle Bachman because things are good here, and we just want the entertainment.

Kinda of Southwest of MSP. She would be working Near St Peter. Really haven’t figured out where we would live and who would commute the most. This may only end up being a short term assignment but could be longer.

Yeah, you should have titled this “Tell me about Mankato” because that’s where you’re going to be living if she’s working in or near St. Peter.

Shakopee is probably the closest Twin Cities suburb to St. Peter and that’s still 45 miles away.
