Southhaven MS is the fastest growing suburb in the entire USA and Petal falls behind many others including D'Iberville, Flowood, Byrum, and Hernando off the top of my head.

We camped near there at little black creek pretty often back in the day. Definitely has some rundown areas and public housing is plentiful as mentioned in a town so small.

The Laurel City Schools are a lost cause.
There are marginally better schools in Jones County but I personally wouldn't send a kid to any of them.
The earlier suggestion of Oak Grove in Lamar County would be my first thought.
That wouldn't be much of a commute.

Laurel isnt far from hattiesburg.. which is good. I live 30mins from hburg. Laurel sucks, town is old and nasty. Nothing there. But you could live in hburg and have a short travel up the interstate to work daily, which is what i would do. Hburg is a growing college town, and nice.

Laurel is a shithole. Live on the North side of Hattiesburg and commute in if you have to. DO NOT LIVE IN LAUREL unless you like being bored to tears with nothing to do. As an added bonus, even the nothing in Laurel shuts down by 9pm.

Do NOT live in Laurel. There are a few nice subdivisions on the outskirts that are family friendly. Ellisville is a decent community. If you are coming here for one of the 3 big businesses; oil, chickens or transformers then ask where they live. The popular majority will tell you Windermere. I got the frick out of town about 5 yrs ago and moved to family property west of town.
ETA Bret was one hell of a ball player.
