And that ride just opened in December 2021. So tragic. I can't imagine seeing that as a parent.
If it's a falling face down ride with only shoulder harness design, it was guaranteed some skinny person was gonna slip out of it. Not surprised it took less than 3 months.
I'm still not watching the video, so I may be wrong about the ride.

No need for such rides, but they push until tragedy hits.

Hardly but as fast as that ride was coming down he was moving at a pretty good pace when he hit

I’m usually not squeamish with stuff but that video is bad.
Read through some of the thread and then watched on mute. Less traumatizing muted.

I hate to say this, but I could tell which guy was going to die before they ever took off….. it was the very heavy guy whose restraint clearly couldn’t come down as far as the other riders.
That being said, it’s a pretty bad design flaw if you don’t have a procedure / policy to account for or just prohibit larger waist line riders.

Wonder if the harness couldn’t come down far enough due to their size and it left a gap on the bottom for them to slip out from.
My thinkn exactly

Am I late to the party or has someone else already solved the case?

I bet something like this happened.
He falls out of the seat as the ride is approaching the bottom. By that point the ride is hitting the brakes so the force of the ride slowing and stopping pushes you into the seat. He probably got forced underneath the restraint as the ride started slowing down.

Notice also how none of them even bother to help the kid after he falls. They just stand there.
Help the kid? Zero chance he needed help at that point.
Looked to me like a manager stood over him and was calling to report the incident. Also looked like the other guy was getting the other riders off the ride.

I want to say there is usually a buckle in between your legs that snaps the harness down to the seat. One time I was riding one of these and couldn't get it to buckle and started to freak out because I thought they were about to launch it. They came around and did their checks and got it snapped in.

Rides with those over-the-shoulder harnesses that lock in place but don't actually physically connect with a strap or anything on the bottom scare the frick out of me. I'm sure there are safety features in place so they can't be disengaged while the ride is going but if that shite disengages and there's no strap I'm dead.

That looks like one of those over the shoulder hydraulic restraint.
You can press against them as they are moving into place and trick them to stop before the restraint has fully locked you in.

This. If that is indeed what happened.

A girl’s feet got cut off a few years ago here on one of those tower drops at (what used to be) Six Flags. A cable snapped and cut them right off. She was in such shock she didn’t even know they had been cut off until the ride stopped.
Those rides have been a big nope for me since then.

Good God, the passenger next to the kid (might have been his friend) had absolutely zero reaction. I think he even walked up to the body and prodded it with his foot. WTF

I remember that and that was horrible

Didn't watch, but looked at the still shot. Is the victim the first rider around the turn from the three riders in the still shot? If yes, that's big kid.
F=ma. How much force can a locked hydraulic piston or locking gear mechanism take before failure?
IMO this will be a case of design or component flaw/failure.
