Fusion reactors have been around for awhile. You can even buy them. The key is getting one that is efficient with more than 100% efficiency the goal. They are building one now in France that when completed should do just that.

I believe Val Kilmer kept plans from falling into the russians hands.

First thing I thought of is how much did it cost to build that thing? You just don't run to Lowes or Home Depot and pick up the material needed to build a nuclear reactor?

What does daddy pockets do for a living?

I believe the Doc and the kid traded the Libyans a bomb made up of used pinball machine parts.

Another kid in Texarkana built a fusion reactor in his parent's garage, apparently inspiring this kid to do the same. This is little more than a very fancy and expensive science fair project. Initiating a fusion reaction lasting a nanosecond or less was high science 60 years ago, it's shade tree physics today.

After reading and digging around the internet:

1) Per article, device costs 8-10k

2) He used already working plans to build (Still hard lets not take away that)

3) His device does not produce a positive net gain (which is the billion dollar plan) and ergo outside of being 13, he hasn't brought anything new to science.

To be fair to the kid, neither has anyone else.

But what steps are being taken to ensure that the field of nuclear physicists is diverse and inclusive?

When I was 14 and discovered boobs on the internet I created a nuclear reaction in my underpants.

Hmph. Looks like some form of simple beam accelerator.

A few weeks ago, I bought a used book* in a thrift store** here in Birmingham, Alabama*** that basically describes the same process.

*Bio of the man who invented the cyclotron
**Think about that

Meanwhile, his two classmates spent 30 min trying to figure out a rotary telephone.
