Team attempting to drill completely thru Earth's crust into mantle

This probably won't end well.
quote:
In early December, the drill ship JOIDES Resolution will depart Colombo, Sri Lanka, and head for a spot in the southwestern Indian Ocean known as Atlantis Bank. There, it will lower a drill bit and try to screw it through 1.5 kilometres of rock, collecting a core sample as it goes. If all goes well, future expeditions — not yet scheduled or funded — will return and finalize the push into the mantle (see ‘Deep understanding’).
This probably won't end well.

What could possibly go wrong?

All dat water gonna drain out baws

I hope the Ghostbusters are on speed dial. This will not end well.

that's gonna take a helluva drill bit. will they need lube?
Posted on 12/2/15 at 9:16 am to bamarep
and release the demons from hell?
Posted on 12/2/15 at 9:16 am to bamarep
If they punch a hole through the crust, it'll let all the magma out and the Earth will deflate. It's science.

What do you think will happen, professor?

Yep cause we don't have enough volcanos so we need to make some more

Obviously we'll pop like a balloon.

Are you naturally a dick, or is it a conscious effort?

OK,
College physical science question time...
Where would you drill if you wanted to drill from the ground surface into the mantle, but with the shortest length of drill to reduce your cost?
Follow up question, how do we know the composition of the lower crust and upper mantle when we haven't drilled that far ever before?

This seems like a REALLY bad idea.

Read an article a while back that there is a giant subterranean ocean under the crust
