Teacher writes on student - is charged criminally

Not sure how I would react if this was my kid but I know I wouldn't want the teacher charged with a crime. Another example of school administrators scared to handle their business and pushing it off on the police?
A middle school teacher is facing charges after he became upset at an eighth grader and wrote the word "focus" on the student's forehead. According to The Virginian-Pilot, instructor Daniel Board had just started working at Landstown Middle School in Virginia Beach, Va.
The 46-year-old mathematics teacher got upset with the student for asking questions and not focusing in class, according to a criminal complaint cited by the newspaper. Board, who was arrested and charged Monday (Oct. 3) with misdemeanor assault and battery, kept the student from wiping the word off his forehead until he finished his school work, the Virginia-Pilot reported.
In a statement sent to The Washington Post, schools Superintendent Aaron Spence said the incident "is a painful reminder that harm is not always physical." "Without question, this action was humiliating for the student and made him the subject of ridicule," Spence said. "Certainly, it showed a lack of judgment and empathy on the teacher's part, and is at odds with our division's core values."

My economics teacher in high school used to put white out on students finger nails who had fell asleep.

Criminal charges are dumb but you should be fired immediately. Writing on a 14 year old kids face because youre a shitty teacher seemed like the right thing to do?

In other words, even if your kid acts like a fricking a-hole, he/she won't get in trouble.

He was arrested for writing "focus"? Did he tattoo it on the kid or something where it couldn't come off? I had a teacher how would throw an eraser from the chalk board like a MLB pitcher, at someone, if they were doing something distracting. I'd rather have "focus" written on my head then get beamed with an eraser.

I take it that you are a good teacher? You work with adolescent children on a daily basis? You are able to get 30 different kids to "focus" without having to resort to such behavior, correct?

Resorting to this behavior is a sign of a bad teacher. There are about 30 other ways to deal with this situation. Have you ever seen a teacher write on a kids face in your life? I havent.

He should have gotten his desk flipped when he was asleep, a bamboo stuck to the back of the head when talking, or stand in front of the class until he gets the correct answer-for days.

Wouldn't be surprised if he had already tried the 30 other ways.
But after that 30 he should have let the kid put his head on his desk and fail as opposed to loose sanity and job in trying to care.

The teacher should be suspended and reprimanded, yes. But criminal charges is grossly overdoing it.

I fell asleep in class and woke up with "Jackass" written on my hand. My teacher wrote jackass on my hand with expo. We all got a big laugh out of it and I washed it off so no one would ask questions. But looking back, it really scarred me for life. I lose sleep at night because of it. I wish I would've reported it.
