I've been an English teacher for almost 12 years, and the chart is definitely accurate in terms of total hours required to grade an essay if you do it correctly. Most English teachers don't though. It's embarrassing how subjective and anal retentive ELA teachers are when it comes to grading papers.

I ascribe to the Richard Straub philosophy on essay feedback: open dialogue through focused comments is key to developing student writers. That requires time. 5 minutes per essay is about what I take per student.

But the thing is, English doesn't necessarily need routine grades and certainly not ones that require extensive amounts of time to complete. With current technology (Google Forms for example), you can have 100+ assessments graded the second they hit submit. I imagine we're not too far away from Google Forms transferring directly into the electronic grade book cutting down even more time.

So let's say I have 100 papers or so to grade and need 8 hours. I tell my students to give me about two weeks to get them back.

That means I can have them finished in two weeks with less than an hour a day of grading. Probably less because there will be some who need less commentary and rarely those that will need more.

I assign two formal essays per semester. That's four weeks of focused grading.

The rest of the time is just regular shite that doesn't take a whole lot of time at all in terms of grading.

Teachers are the absolute worst whiners, and yes, I agree with the poster above: it's because it's a field dominated by women.

Most teachers are women.

Women crave attention and validation

My brother is a teacher at Dallas ISD. He doesn't do this. Infact he was loving his Thanksgiving break.

This is attention whoring like no other.

Who are we kidding? Teachers don’t grade papers now a days. All students have to do now is turn it in and they get a participation trophy

Nobody forced them to be teachers. It's not like there isnt a ton of info out there that teachers get paid shite and work extra time.

Stop bitching and change careers then.

Don't give so many test and you wouldn't have so many test to grade.

every election year there is a new proposal to increase taxes to fund the school systems.

Every industry raises costs. Simply put, as costs of living adjusts, the amount it costs to run a non-profit also increases.

Schools can’t add 2cents to every sale and make up the difference for cost of living adjustments.

When a school buys books, cabinets, computers etc all of those costs increase continuously. Why wouldn’t the amount needed to purchase them also increase?

Are you saying that their cut of property taxes stays the same regardless of changes in the district?

When Edwin Edwards was governor.. He promised that all revenue generated by gambling (casino boats) would go towards education.

Not sure if this contributes to the conversation, just wanted to throw that out there.

if I were a teacher I’d make every rest a multiple choice and use a template over the test pages. Mark wrong ones, determine % right, assign grade......pow, on to the next. 30 seconds each maybe.

I guess teachers are the only profession that works outside of normal business hours.

When I get home from work I play with my kid until he goes to bed after dinner. Then I open my laptop and work until between midnight and 2am. So typically 10 to 20 extra hours a week. Not including weekends.

But I enjoy it and it's rewarding so it's worth it.

They work from 8-3 and are off 3mos+ every year.

IDGAF if you have to work 8-5 once per week.

In what universe would grading papers actually be considered work? I have graded my share of papers, anything u can do while watching football and drinking beer is not exactly taxing.
