We need to start her a gofundme for some new fun bags. Those kids are depending on it.

A substitute’s salary runs from $174.66 to $240.26 a day, the Chronicle reported.

I get 10 paid sick days per year, plus in my contract I have 40 days EXTENDED paid leave in case of something major. Once those are used up, I’m on my own.
I know in some school systems, employees are allowed to “donate” unused sick days to others in need (such as this).

erious question, if it wasn’t breast cancer but rather a broken leg, a punctured lung, or any number of ailments, would this have even made news?
Of course not. It’s only news because of the disease and wording of the law. The teacher still gets some income which is more than a teacher in LA gets when they run out of PTO.
If the law simply stated that they had up to a 100 days at 20% of their salary this wouldn’t be newsworthy either.

Pretty sure that’s how it works here. I know teachers that have told me they have to find their own sub or try to first at least.

Teacher gets $100 a day while on sick leave
The school district takes $75 of this to pay the sub
The teacher gets the rest for being on sick leave
The above applies after the teacher exhausts her initial 10 days of sick leave and is applicable for 100 additional days of sick leave.
Fine! Stick to factual info if you want to, but it's much less entertaining.

It's California.

Here locally teachers have to find their own subs if they can, and they usually want to, to ensure they get who they want, but if they can't, then it gets blasted out to all the subs in the district to grab.
But the teacher doesn't have to pay for it.

I am confused. It's May 10th. How many more days are left in the school year? When was she diagnosed?
I had a professor who was diagnosed with breast cancer. She did miss a lot of days but worked as much as she possibly could when she wasn't receiving treatment.

The message should be "isn't it great that she still gets paid something when she is sick?" Most other places you get the time off without pay. If you are self employed it costs you money to take time off whether sick or not.
Why should the tax payers be forced to pay for two employees? At least they are nice enough to give the teacher the difference in paying her and a substitute.
