I was referencing audio cables/wires where on the opposite ends you have people who believe that as long as you have wire that produces an electrical connection without some crazy level of resistance or capacitance, it will sound exactly like $10,000 speaker cables woven in a specific pattern from unobtanium, like 9 nines silver et al.

In general you are correct. Analog can theoretically produce a perfect sine wave. The digital wave is made of of thin slices that look like skyscrapers side by side. The higher bit rate the more narrow those skyscrapers are and the closer to a pure sine wave they can produce. The question is where this becomes audible to an individual. I have long since given up on telling other people what they can and can not hear but I will challenge them to prove it via ABX but I never get takers. The problem with vinyl vs CD (or other lossless 16bit or higher digital reproduction) comparisons is there are some many bigger differences than the waveform shape anyone with a decently trained ear will know which is which immediately and then their opinion is likely just bias comfirmation.

I have finally after over 45 years in the hobby come to the conclusion that people should just buy and listen to what makes them tap their feet. However, don't get suckered into feeling like you can't get good sound even on a limited discretionary spending budget as long as you allocate the funds correctly. On the low end that is almost always digital front end, solid state amplification and the chunk of your money spent on speakers and for god's sake, acoustic room treatments (as long as the spousal acceptance factor allows).

I have friends with 6-figure 2-channel rigs that sound mid for 2 main reasons. Zero absorption and diffusion in the room and slavish devotion to purism. They could add $2k in properly placed acoustic treatments and transform their systems for the better by leaps and bounds. They could leave purism behind and add three subwoofers run through a DSP and tune them for the room and all the sound below the Schroeder frequency (the frequency below which in an individual room, sound starts acting like a particle instead of a wave) be so much better.

Audiophiles are some of the worst people when it comes to allocating funds and getting bang for the buck.
