You have to be careful with that assertion. Entry turntable cartridges have maybe 55-60dB of dynamic range, when you get up over about $400 for a cartridge, you get closer to vinyl's dynamic range limit of about 75dB. 16 bit CD audio has a 96dB dynamic range limit and a lower sound floor. Especially given the decibel scale is logarithmic, the difference between 75dB and 96dB is huge.

As to analog vs digital, my understanding is one is a smooth wave and the other looses spots in the compression process. If we apply GIGO, the output is less because the input was less in the first place. Why, in theory a "transporter" is just making a copy of you and faxes and copies distort with each successive transfer.
