So if it is not the compression (what you call the skyscrapers) process from the digital side, what is it? My computer nerd history goes back to switching systems on toy train tracks and then to punch cards and paper tape.On a side note, part of it is generational. I still write things out on yellow legal pads or grid sheets and I still prefer an actual book or newspaper. Something about a reel to reel or a turntable spinning is just part of the process.

That brings me back to the stud wall situation. If video / internet is not your speciality, what about things done it the stud wall. Years ago I was fascinated by "weaving" insulation on say a 2 x 8 stud wall and 2 x 4 stud offset on each side say 16" on center. Theory was a baffling as no hard wood along the whole wall greatly reduced the bouncing of sound. Apparently this can be accomplished now with say a 2 x 6 stud wall and blowing foam in all the interior walls. Aside from ferret R values on the thermals, it greatly helps sound as a bonus.

If you are familiar with Auditory Learning Disability (or whatever they call it these days)? People with this issue hear the same way old people do with hearing aids in that it picks up all sound but can not filter for the sound the listener needs to focus on the most. In short, the bigger the crowds the more it turns into the sounds of ducks quacking
