GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WPEC) — Are you "ready for it," Swifties?
Taylor Swift is about to make her debut at the University of Florida (UF) in the form of a 13-week course during the spring semester of 2024.

According to the UF Honors Program website, the class will be called "Musical Storytelling with Taylor Swift and other iconic female artists" and will discuss Taylor Swift's discography while focusing on evergreen songwriting.
The course will focus on the parallels between Swift's lyrics and the works of other female artists such as Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday and Dolly Parton.
Each week students will be expected to write on themes like old flames, infidelity, aging and double standards.

Students will be expected to write two discussion posts, an introduction and an analysis of themes. Students will also see 'On Your Feet!' a musical about Gloria Estefan.
At the end of the semester, students will partner to create a final project of their choosing.

LSU has a course that ties her with Shakespeare.

As if we needed any further evidence that college is a joke.

So...not Marvin Gaye or another legend, but Taylor Swift?

You laugh but the irony is, Taylor Swift probably writes 10% of her lyrics and there’s historical arguments to be made that Shakespeare wasn’t even a real person and hence didn’t write most of his poetry either.
ETA… so, that’s a huge parallel right there

Universities have had pop culture classes for decades. Nothing new.

You aren't required to this course.
And it looks like math, science, engineering are all still taught at the University of Florida

That’s definitely worth borrowing $100k for

I’m ready for the critical theory course on deconstructing Taylor Swift for her manifestation of White colonialism.

No Tom Petty?
What was this UF fan even fighting for then?

These courses are just marketing gimmicks (and judging by the headlines and this story it worked)
it’s still a class limited to a few students each semester and is it really different than “history of jazz” or other music electives were required to take? I think LSU had a history of rock and roll when I was there.

And if you’re going into one of those fields, college is where you need to go. Same for medical fields. But let’s be honest, probably well over half of the students going to college today are wasting their time and money. Most of them would do better to go from high school and straight into an apprenticeship in whatever field they plan to make a career.

I really hope I am alive when the downfall of women happens.
The overcorrection they are setting themselves up for is catastrophic.

This is making me question my donor support as a UF alum.
Although, points toward UF, I have a liberal turned progressive friend who is a Neuropsychologist there and is angry because UF, and DeSantis, have prevented them from learning about/researching things like the impact of systemic racism on minority students, minority students ability to pursue postgraduate work, and other horseshite that I cant remember her telling me about.
I'll take a Taylor Swift musical course over all of the bullshite being taught at most universities. Still seems like UF is keeping most of, and certainly the worst, woke/progressive, racist shite out of our curriculum.

You have to have something for those who receive NIL money to take.
