Are there that many people in Lake Charles aspiring to condo life?

I can’t say. It was an offhand suggestion.

That building, like many other opulent bank buildings across dilapidated America seems like an economic failure, a waste of somebody else’s money to stroke the ego of an overpaid bank executive.

This was all correct before Laura. I think the worry is that the owners take the insurance money (which won't be nearly enough to cover the expenses of fixing it) and leave, leaving a 20-story tall abandoned structure.

Yeah……until the next hurricane comes.

They'd have to totally rework the exterior to handle hurricanes. Not to mention people staying in a condo or hotel tower are more likely to want balconies.

They are adding balconies to the Chase South tower in Baton Rouge. About half of those floors are going condo.

I think the better move is to have the new Horseshoe Casino take the property. They can repurpose the structure as a hotel. Plenty of space on the plot of land it sits on for a giant casino. And there's already a parking deck that they can dress up.

Place has been half empty for years, parking leaves a lot to be desired.

I had no idea it was there either until about month ago. I was coming from MB to downtown around 5 one day and took that way to avoid traffic. I surprised to see the old Harrah's sitting there.

A condo tower would be kind of cool.

That needs to be evacuated for every storm?

Weren't the owners looking to sell it before Laura? I could definitely see them doing just that.

honestly would be awesome but they are already building the new land based casino.

but honestly doing that, turning 2-3 floors into casino and turning the north parking lot into a huge pool area like the nugget would be great for LC. terrible for westlake but great for the overall area and downtown.

with that, the new crying eagle on the lake front and hurricane & childrens museums would go a long ways to revitalize down town.

i just worry, like sfp said, the owners just leave it to rot.

If it comes down its better for the other people in the commercial rentals game. The tower was more than LC ever needed.

That tower has been 1/3 to 1/2 empty for years.

Will be a much more common story for commercial office space almost everywhere worldwide…at least for the next 5-10 years.

That’s spot on. It’s still like this to this day. That victim mentality.

To their credit. Lake Charles and the 2020 storm victims have gotten jack shite when it comes to assistance. Nothing at all like Katrina.

My running joke with my wife was #GiveUpStrong everytime I saw that sign. After Laura people (business owners) kind of just quit life for a series of weeks. Every conversation was "I don't know if we will come back" and those conversations are still being had.

#GiveUpStrong

well can you blame them? LC area was the only area of the state before the hurricane with any real economic growth. The storm shut that door quick.

With the very very shitty overall economy in louisiana, more more aggressive progressive politics in the state capital and just overall terrible outlook....why would expect everyone want to rush back?

plus you were around for rita. while not as bad, this is the second time for many business owners to take that hit. Most people in LC werent around for audrey so rita was a big shock, now a second storm 15 years later has many questioning why they stay here.

same thing you see happening across this board with nola people.
