I'm guessing it is supposed to work on your peripheral vision. Making you go as quick as you can probably makes your brain want to cheat and scan the next set of instructions before you actually concentrate on them.
The long set of calculations would seem to heighten the anticipation of the next instruction while clouding your periphery with lots of text (everything is spaced together closely) then when you're supposed to be at the height of 'looking ahead' they space the text way out and by the time you actually concentrate on the instruction, you've already half way scanned it.
