When I was a kid, there would be Sunday family gatherings at an Uncle’s house. Lot of chicken on the grill & twice as much beer. The conversation would usually drift to stories of their youth. On more than one occasion, someone would mention my Dad’s love of the water & his strength as a swimmer. They claimed he used to go to the foot of Canal St in NOLA & swim the river & back. Seems he did this many times.

As fate would have it, he was in a horrible gasoline fire & had a tracheostomy tube in the throat the rest of his life.Could never get close to the water again.

I’m now older than he was when he passed, love the water, but would not even consider a river swim, in my youth or now. Good luck!

as a kid, i swam in the river in st bernard. that water is cold, even in the summer. and it's wicked fast and loaded with debris, logs, trees and shite. i heard "tales" of people who actually swam across but, i don't see it.

i'd definitely lay my money on the river vs any swimmer.

I have a feeling my odds of making it across the Mississippi River is a little better than the odds of climbing Mount Everest.

The success rate of the average person being given a parka and crampons and told to climb Everest is statistically 0% I'm guessing

So yes, 1% is a little better than that

A good family friend did it when he was much younger and made it across. The river took him over a mile downstream though

I had a buddy that jumped off the Riverboat back when they used to sail. He made back to levee from about the middle of the river. Then he made it to jail.

No not at all, a good friend lives one of the houses on River Road near Ben Hur. They own property that goes across river road to the river and we used to swim in it pretty regularly. We wouldn't go out far but deep enough to where you couldn't stand, it gets chilly but it's nothing like people here are making it out to be.

I guess the middle would be colder though but who knows, I'm not going to find out

Cold enough to probably get you into trouble. I've been in it in early Oct and it was chilly, like a cold early april swimming pool.

They must take that temp off the surface, it is cooler than 80 degrees 4-5 feet down during the summer

Probably so.

For the purposes of this conversation, I think most people swimming across the river do so on the surface though.

Swim it wearing one of those c02 life jackets. If the current starts fricking you up and pulling you under or whatever. Just pull the cord.

swimming in a current like that is no easy task... would be easier in saltwater where you float better....

would not even entertain it without fins and a snorkel. and being 25 years younger.

If you started in Baton Rouge and was in shape enough to make it across you would make across around St. Gabriel the current is so strong.

but

I would die and I'm in decent shape!
