Obviously it’s dangerous, but I don’t think it’s as bad as people make it out to be. My dad used to work on a barge in Nola when he was in college and they would jump off and swim.

Well a couple things come into play here. First, jumping off a barge and swimming is not the same as swimming all the way across and through traffic. Second the river right now is completely different than at the end of the summer. The river is about as high as they let it get (at least in NOLA). I really think they needed to open more of the spillway than they did but are under so much pressure to not.

D D Breaux did it back in the day. Of course she has those personal flotation devices

My great uncle leapt off of the east side of the Huey P in the 60’s. He survived and was fished out by a tug boat and the coast guard.
He told officers he was mugged and thrown off the bridge before admitting it was a suicide attempt.

This only goes to 40’ and the BR gage is at 44’ right now. I can also assure you that it’s nearer the max velocity and not the mean.
It's probably close to 6.5 mph on average going across. The whole river isn't moving at max velocity. In the middle area, it would be faster, likely 8.8 mph.
I was surprised to see the water faster in Baton Rouge than Belle Chasse. I figured deeper water meant slower speed. Gauge is 19' in BC and 44 for BR. I'm missing something.

No way, no how.
At its height right now in BR...I watch whole trees go under near our docks and don’t ever see them pop up again as far as my eyes can see. Imagine what that will do you a little human. Sure, near the levees will be a little easy but in the middle of the River, nope.
I’d say your best bet would be in the shallower part of the River like near Plaquemines Parish. But even crossing to Braitheway it’s rough.

If you’re just swimming along the surface, is there something about the current that’s trying to suck surface objects under somehow? Does the current keep driving you toward the middle so you can’t ever get to the shore under your own power?
Have you ever stood close to the river and watched the currents? It’s terrifying how powerful the MS river is

Yall are just pussies.
I swim that bitch every morning as a warmup.
Here's my proof:

Well the river at normal stage is probably deeper at BC than BR. It’s also a bit wider IIRC. Also, BC is below the currently open spillway. The flood stage numbers are not the depth of the water they are the height above sea level.

I am with you.
Let’s go to the place where you can just walk across. It is much safer.

"with a couple of breaks" ???? Yeah, I don't know how to do that, my breaks would end up on the floor of the river. I'd drown really quick/

This is the worst quarantine-induced fantasy I’ve heard.
By the time you realize you won’t make it, you will be too far out to turn back.

Aside from the already talked about physical challenges this would provide, I’d be too grossed out to even try. The Mississippi River in Baton Rouge or really anywhere in southern Louisiana is basically the bottom of the toilet bowl. It has collected all the nasty sewerage and chemicals and anything else you can think of that literally every other river in the United States has deposited. You get in there in Baton Rouge, and you pretty much come out with a third arm, or sterile for life

There is 0% chance you'd make it. If someone could make it they would have already had a Monster Drink New Year's Eve Special on it.

If it’s doable why doesn’t anyone ever try it
Most would drown
It would be difficult for an Olympic caliber swimmer

Didn't a homeless crackhead do it in New Orleans?
