Sewerage & Water Board officials still don't know what's causing rain to back up and flood the downtown area, even after examining most of the major underground canals nearby.

quote:

after sending crews to walk through three of the four major pathways that allow water to be pumped out the Central Business District, the S&WB hasn't found any major blockages, Executive Director Ghassan Korban told a City Council committee on Wednesday.

The next phase of the investigation will see the Department of Public Works look into the smaller pipes that lead from catch basins to the canals and there's some indication that those pipes could be a bottleneck. Department of Public Works Director Keith LaGrange said Wednesday that crews have been looking at pipes on St. Charles Avenue. The pipes are only 10 inches in diameter which may be inadequate for the area's needs.

Have they considered that the fourth major pathway maybe is blocked?

Wasn't there a poster on TD who discovered that all the drainage culverts around his house were full of like 10' of compacted dirt and growth?

Then when he called the city they claimed they were clean. Something along those lines.

i mean, didn't Latoya tell folks to clean out the catch basins? I guess they were too busy shooting people?

Since the catch basins are so full of dirt you could grow it in them.

Mayor LaToya should commission a $20,000,000 study from a politically connected engineering group (or two) then raise rates 25%. That should tighten everything up.

Better hope those outer rain bands on TD 38 dont linger next week.

Otherwise the pumps will need all the petrol they can handle.

Many drains don't drain in the CBD. Here's one on Baronne by the Jesuit church last month. The Pere Marquette hotel was pumping gunk out of a lower level (probably from flooding) and it was just pooling, mirror smooth in the street on a sunny day. Water was running down the block to the next catch basin.

Does not surprise me at all. They have found wooden drain pipes under bourbon during this latest project.

Buildings settle, even in rocky not below sea level soil. If they did an honest to God audit of every last inch of drain pipe in and around the CBD and they said 40% wasnt usable/passable/working I would legit think that number is low.

Settling, blockages, construction, cutting existing pipe and just ignoring it. All in play.

You have to at least applaud the honesty.

That is IMPOSSIBLE. One year after taking office Mitch assured us that he had done an exhaustive review of the SWB and his handpicked team was going to right the ship.

Of course, seven years later he acted as if he had never heard of the SWB.

Let me help.

6 decades, or more, of neglect.

With utilities and telecommunications, much is talked about regarding the "Last Mile" to hook up to homes, and about the vast majority of problems are located on the Last Mile.

With the drainage system, it's the First Mile. It's the connections between the catch basin and the culvert. They are full of mud, or beads, or just sink and crack.

What they need to do is install some cameras and sensors in the box culverts and next time we get a heavy rain, watch them. I'm willing to bet the water levels never get that high.
