Surprising number of EV owners switch back to gas power, study says
quote:

The study looked at owners in California specifically and found home charging was a huge factor in people dropping the EV lifestyle.

As so much of the world works to pivot away from fossil fuels and the internal-combustion engine, a new study from the University of California, Davis, published in the journal Nature Energy last week, showed some concerning signs for what the auto industry still needs to get right. According to this study, which looked at California EV owners specifically between 2015-2019, 18% of electric vehicle owners switched back to a gas-powered car. For plug-in hybrid owners, 20% of them flipped back to a car solely powered by an engine.

The major takeaway from the EV flip-flopping lands in the lap of charging -- specifically at-home charging. The lack of reliable Level 2 charging at home (that's a 240-volt plug) was a major factor leading to EV "discontinuance," as the researchers called it. That makes sense. If you don't have a place to charge reliably, it makes it a lot harder to enjoy the benefits associated with an EV, including an overall lower cost of ownership. Public charging infrastructure remains just OK, with many stations down for maintenance, or simply not close enough to drivers, even in California, where chargers are more common than the rest of the US. And charging times at a public station still aren't on par with gassing up a car.

According to the research, about half of the respondents who bought another EV had access to Level 2 charging, compared to the 30% who dumped the electric lifestyle, but had a proper plug at home. The research found owners were 53% less likely to buy another EV if they did not have access to convenient, at-home charging. Essentially, it was a coin toss over whether an EV owner either stuck with it or returned to gas pumps.

Just OK is not OK.

Can these even be installed in some garages? We tried to get an additional plug installed in our garage a few years ago and the electrician said it wouldn't be to code and he couldn't do it. I wanted an outlet without a GFCI, so maybe that had something to do with it.

Bc they don’t want the government deciding to turn off the grid in the future.

I'm shocked.
You're telling me the "idea" of having an EV is better than the reality of owning and operating an EV?!?
Double shocked.

It's almost as though being a first mover to encourage the development of the infrastructure is a burden until the infrastructure is in place.

Honestly im not against EV at all. I think its a good viable way of transportation. What I am against is this ridiculous push for something that we're just not ready for yet and likely wont be for some time. Its going to take probably 10-20 years at least to get proper infrastructure in place to make it feasible.

Technically combustion engines are solar power. They just harness the sun's energy via old dead plants and animals.

240V in a garage isn't kosher? Or is it the EV charging hardware that's the issue?

I always figured I could put 240V anywhere I wanted, as long as there's a roof and walls.

240 with an 60 amp breaker (I think...not electrician) isn't that hard to do on newer homes.

But that means you need a dedicated parking space. Some urban areas with street parking don't have that luxury.

Who the frick buys an EV without knowing if you can charge it at your house first?

People are fricking stupid.

I don't recall anything in the NEC about not being able to mount a 240V in a residential garage. Could be a local requirement though. I'd assume he could have mounted another branch circuit box external your main panel otherwise.

Maybe he just didn't want frick with doing all that work.

This really doesn't surprise me. First and foremast, the push to WFH has eliminated commutes for many and I know several people who only owned a Prius because they lived in BFE burbville and wanted to save money so they could spend more on travel ball. Then there are plenty of people who realize they just don't fit with their lifestyle, i.e. road trips, etc.

Seriously? ALL power that comes into your breaker is 240V. Power into your house is 110 so only a matter of rewiring your set up from the main box.

The problem was most likely that his service wasn’t big enough to handle another 10 kVA load.
