SURPRISE: Less pollution is leading to more hurricanes.

A new NOAA study published today in the journal Science Advances about four decades of tropical cyclones reveals the surprising result that reducing particulate air pollution in Europe and North America has contributed to an increase in the number of tropical cyclones in the North Atlantic basin
Meanwhile, it looks like China and India’s pollution is having a positive impact on Cyclones in the Pacific.

The study also found that the growth of particulate pollution in Asia has contributed to fewer tropical cyclones in the western North Pacific basin.

Over the last 40 years, Europe and North America have been leaders in reducing particulate air pollution from industry, autos, energy and other sources. The increasing absence of human-caused air pollution in the Northern Hemisphere, estimated to be a 50-percent drop in concentration from 1980 to 2020, has led to surface warming over the tropical Atlantic Ocean, which contributes to more frequent tropical cyclones. Without significant amounts of particulate pollution to reflect sunlight, the ocean absorbs more heat and warms faster. A warming Atlantic Ocean has been a key ingredient to a 33-percent increase in the number of tropical cyclones during this 40-year period, Murakami said.

So we need more cow farts to reduce our risk to hurricanes?
Posted on 5/11/22 at 2:41 pm to Ghost of Colby
So saving the environment will destroy our coastlines anyway?

Chopping off our nose to spite our face.

I, for one, did NOT see this coming

Cow farts release methane, a greenhouse gas. Almost all of the recent research has been blaming greenhouse gases for climate change, but this study adds another element into the equation.

Sounds like no one knows shite from frick in regard to CC

I hate articles like these. Just tell me how many tax dollars are needed so we can increase our carbon footprint to sustainable levels.

I’m going to equip my truck to “roll coal”. Next time a hurricane is approaching, I’ll just crank it up and make the storm dissipate. Y’all can thank me later.

So... global warming increases hurricanes, and pollution reduces global warming? Is that what this is?
Posted on 5/11/22 at 2:54 pm to LSUFanHouston
does this mean we can go back to the original diesel engines that blew black smoke and ran forever?

I think better satellites add to the total number of tropical storms.

Oh how rich is that lmao!

Over 90% climatologist agree that they need more funding to figure it out

Makes sense.
Of course pollution is not good for human health, so not really a call to pollute more but an interesting consequence of less pollution.

I've been reliably informed that the science is settled.
This seems as if the Science may not have been Settled.

Pollution decreased by 50%??
I find it very hard to believe the pollution has decreased over those 40 years when the world population INCREASED by 3.3 billion in that timeframe.

I mean I guess the moral of the story is until countries like China and India reduce their pollution, we will keep getting screwed.
If humans are contributing to global warming, the entire planet needs to participate in reducing emissions. And we don’t even have a protective pollution cloud to show for it.

Trust the Science?
No, trust that this will get buried.
