Sunday preachin’: Louisiana MUST diversify beyond Oil and Gas

If we ever want to be seen as a legitimate destination for those who grew up out of state. O&G is to Louisiana what coal is to West Virginia. It’s made this state reliant on a cyclical boom-and-bust economic output for 30+ years.
Don’t get me wrong, O&G is a great compliment to any economy but relying on it solely is just stupid, and we seem to do stupid really well...
Texas has O&G but they’ve also developed; tech, tourism, ranching, farming, etc etc...
The rust belt cities of the past realized they couldn’t rely on the same industries and Columbus, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Detroit (to a lesser degree), among others have taken steps to not only rely on the staples of the past without abandoning them completely but diversify into other areas that make them attractive on a national scale despite shitty weather.
I know we like to view ourselves as better than states like; Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, and others but those states have obviously already overtaken us in economic output and probably quality of life. Hell, Mississippi is overtaking us.

Dude, you seem like a good enough guy. And it’s not that your complaints against Louisiana aren’t unfounded, but...I think it’s time to give it a rest.
I don’t live in LA anymore and tend to agree with you on these issues, and it’s even getting a bit tired for me.
If you don’t like it there, move. It sounds complicated, but it’s really not.

I don't disagree with you OP but I've lived here long enough to realize that LA will never improve much in my lifetime.
We plan to just leave when my daughter is done with school. I'll always love my home state but can't see spending the rest of my life here hoping it's going to change.

Our labor pool is fricking garbage. This state is loaded with uneducated retards. Nobody wants to invest in this shithole, especially with Honor Code as governor.

Houston owns on Medicine and Research as well. Don't forget that.

I'd live in Louisiana over Cleveland and Detroit by a wide margin and I've spent a fair amount of time in all 3 places.

We also need a new Constitution and to get rid of all the corruption.

Nice sermon...20 years too late
Louisiana diversified away from oil and gas many years ago. It wasn’t due to wise councilling like yours but because almost every oil and gas company left. Now, we have an even more robust tourism industry; we have a movie industry; we have a very underrated tech industry; the medical industry is booming; and of course farming, manufacturing, and the oil and gas service industry are with us to the extent they were before. Welcome to 2018.

I have been saying this for years. This is something that should have been addressed in the 80s because Louisiana lives and dies by Oil & Gas. Commercial fishing and agriculture isn't enough to keep the state going.. Well, I guess the medical industry is up there, but there needs to be more to keep educated people in the state. For obvious reasons.. You want to have people with good jobs, stay in the state.. That's more tax dollars.
We need to find away to have a strong tech industry here.
What happened to the movie industry? It seemed like there were several years when a lot of films were being shot here then all of a sudden it stopped. It had to do with the taxes right? There was a tax incentive for the film industry and it is no longer in place? If so, why would the state not continue to give them tax incentives? Even if they come here and pay no taxes, they are still bringing in people, it creates jobs (production companies, etc).
Also, I think we need something big here. Our "disney world" so to speak. Something that is big. Creates jobs, brings in people from all over the world year around, etc.
I think these are places to start.

I realize it could be perceived as another ‘bash Louisiana’ thread by me, i’ve certainly been guilty of it in the past, but that’s not what I’m trying to do here. I just think we can do better as a state, we have to do better as a state. We are sinking, literally....
And we’re falling significantly behind economically and educationally. We’re dead last in almost every category and calling it out should be perceived as bashing, but rather recognizing that we have some issues that we desperately need to correct.

Because the tax incentives were costing more than they were bringing in. They really offered no benefit at all other than me seeing Jessica Simpson in the Fox and the Hound one time
