Suicide rates for young girls are rising at a pace faster than that of boys, changing the established patterns that boys are more likely to die by suicide and that girls are more likely to consider it and attempt it, according to a new study.

Researchers at Nationwide Children's Hospital in in Columbus, Ohio analyzed suicide rates of US kids and teens ages 10 to 19 between 1975 and 2016 using the Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research database, run by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In that period, there were more than 85,000 suicides in kids and teens, with 80% in boys and 20% in girls. The rates of suicide peaked in 1993 and had been on the decline until 2007, when they again started to climb, according to the findings, published Friday in JAMA.

Although boys were 3.8 times more likely than girls to kill themselves over the 40-year study period, the gap is rapidly narrowing. Starting in 2007, the rates of suicide for girls 10 to 14 increased 12.7% per year, compared with 7.1% for boys the same age.

Prescription meds coupled with the social media craze is absolutely the cause for this IMO.

Thanks to social media the world is so much bigger to these kids and it makes them feel even less significant. As a teen in the 90s, I thought the outside world was just outside of my school district.

I was coming to say social media and medications are to blame but it looks like we have that covered already.

Global warming is making girls uglier so they kill themselves more.

Social media fills their heads with lies. It's honestly sad and everyone is quick to point it out but no one is willing to provide any real solutions. Parents certainly seem as lax and uncaring as ever.

Social media and boys are being introduced to hard core porn at young ages. Girls are trying to compete with unattainable standards in not only looks but sexual output. Smart phones and social media are bad for kids.

Parents, buy your kids a flip phone if anything.

Good. Gotta close those gaps between males and females in all things.

I know it’s already been said but if anyone thinks social media isn’t playing a part in this is fooling themselves.

It’s a shame how many other girls paint a picture of a perfect life on social media while others depress themselves wishing they had everything based on lies.

I actually unfriended a a 30something male because of his blatant use of hashtags trying to paint a picture of his “perfect” life and his “perfect” kids. Or was incredibly obnoxious and I couldn’t take it anymore.

I still haven’t figured out how I’m going to lay down the law with my daughter when it’s social media time or how to explain to her how most people online are lying about most things.

Growing up during the “social media age” which really kickstarted when I was around 8, it most definitely depresses the shite out of you. No good use for social media unless you are promoting a business through marketing purposes. Other then that, I’ve started deleting all my accounts. No Facebook, Twitter, rarely use a Snapchat and about to delete Instagram. Nothing good comes from personal social media’s, it’s just people trying to fake a perfect life or raise impossible standards for the youth to look up to

I can’t imagine being stupid enough to ask others on social media if I should kill myself
