Young people today don't know how to people, and they can't handle it. Blame the parents for using electronics to babysit.

Social media seems like it's an easy throw away excuse, but I think the impact is probably significant. Not just for bullying or thinking everyone else has it better than you, but for the overall fleeting nature of satisfaction that comes from having your relationships play out in likes and status updates.

maybe I'm just a sexist or just don't understand today's youth, but this would seem more likely to be reasons for young girls than young boys

This is the result when your country is controlled by the white supremacist patriarchy.

Girls are ten times more likely than boys to “attempt” suicide. Boys are 10 times more likely to actually commit suicide.

Yet another reason to conclude that men and women are completely different and that treating them the same is retarded.

Can you blame them? Our schools, entertainment, and news media are scaring the Hell out of them.

Young people aren't tough anymore and seem to be easily offended.

These things do nothing for them to toughen them up...

Participation trophies.
Protecting them from bullies.
Everyone should go to college mentality.

Get rid of social media. Everyone compares their life to everyone else’s highlight reel.

Yes, and what exacerbates it is that this entire world is now at their fingertips and they feel even less significant and meaningful because of it. Teens already struggle to fit in and gain self confidence and having access to this entire world is just overwhelming to them. As I said, when I was a teen I thought the next school district over was the "outside world" and far away.

I can understand that it can be looked at that way, but even as an adult, I’m guilty of it. Or was guilty of it at some point. Seeing what so and so has. What they’ve accomplished. Envy can mess someone up if you aren’t careful.

But over time, I’ve grown past that and understood that as much as you can envy something/someone, behind these altered pictures, altered truth in how happy they are or how strong their family ties are.....the reality is that they aren’t perfect and as much as they try to be on social media, they’re playing a character. A character they want people to believe they are behind the nonsense.

With teenagers, I know that has to be an insanely difficult thing to see. Being naive and without experience in life, judging a book by its cover is what you’re going to get. Then comes the roller coaster of emotions. Some can’t handle that

we had some rough times as a country before 1960 (civil war, couple of WWs, depression, etc) so its possible

Possible? Yeah, I can agree with that. I suppose it’s possible. However, I’d say it’s highly unlikely. For one, family units were far stronger and more stable prior to 1960. Plus people were not as affluent as they are today. So while we look back at conditions in the past as being unbearable, to them it was perfectly normal. In short, they didn’t realize how tough times were because to them it was just how things were. Also, the country as a whole was far more devout Christian. This is an important detail due to the fact most Christians believe suicide is a sin that will send you to hell. I think when you put all these factors together, it’s unlikely suicide rates, even during WWII and the depression, were as high as they are today.

That's perhaps a valid point, but maybe it's because the "game" has changed in a way that favors the coping mechanisms for girls.

Girls have always/usually had their passive aggressive/non-physical confrontations. With zero tolerance policies in schools now, boys aren't allowed to have their confrontations like they used to.

Also, boys are more likely to be medicated at a young age for behavior "issues." Perhaps that has a part to play in it as well.

Rise of single parent households...who is usually that single parent?

You can go down quite the tinfoil rabbit hole with this.

It’s not that kids are sitting around saying “Oh no, my post didn’t get enough likes”. It’s the fact that social media actually warps the way they view and understand the world.

All of the platforms foster this BS sense of “community” and “friendship”. The problem is that the majority of these people aren’t your friends. They’re simply people who receive information about you through whatever app your using. But there’s no real connection or relationship. That’s why people with 50,000 Facebook friends or half a million twitter followers always talk about how lonely they are.

which is why I would question the suicide stats from earlier decades

but either way, the sharp increase in suicides rates within the last 20 years is something to consider and discuss

Kids today are such pussies.

Back in my day, we cut across and it was just for attention.

Yep, and combine this with, as you say, the mass shootings, and i’ll add the daily killings in urban areas, and the willingness to put shite like heroin in their veins like this country’s never seen before points to a very clear disrespect for human life, even their very own human life. It’s a sad place, and getting sadder I’m afraid.

maybe one of the reasons is because adults constantly tell the kids how bad things are now?

old person: "man kids are killing themselves at alarming rates these days"

also old person: "hey kids, I feel sorry for you and you know its only going to get worse, right?"
