medicate kids with a belt when they act up. time to go old school. put the meds in the cabinet. it's our fault for molding them into wierdos and wimps.
This has nothing to do with it. Growing up is awkward and sometimes difficult
Add in social media and it can be downright hell for some kids. Contrary to the hardasses in this board that like to talk shite about young kids, I would say growing up now is one of the most difficult times from a coming of age perspective

Whether you believe in God or not, organized religion helped young people cope with the outside world and gave them a pathway to understanding their place in the world what society as a whole expected of them. We’ve taken that away from them as a society and replaced it with nothing forcing young people to try and figure it out all by themselves. Then we give them these devices that allow them to connect with a massive world of other children who are as equally incapable of understanding what’s going on around them with little to no adult supervision. It’s an online version of Lord of the Flies with real life consequences that children and teens are incapable of comprehending.
There’s a lot of truth in what you said here.

The question now is what can be done to turn things around?
Shutting down social media is the only way. Which will never happen. So instead we will attack guns and prescription medication abuse.

Young Americans are too damn soft. Can’t handle any type of adversity

Your first post ITT made me wonder if you lacked reading comprehension. Your second post ITT confirmed it.
Look in the mirror son. My reading comprehension is just fine. I didn’t dispute the OP’s statement of having the highest suicidal rate on record for our country I was simply stating how we compared to the rest of the world moron.

I think quite plainly, the pressure on kids (who grow up in middle to upper-class homes) is the highest it's ever been.
The pressure to get good grades, get into a good college, pay for that college after with entry level jobs on suppressed salaries, all while trying to live up to a lifestyle and attitude on social media at all times that exudes health, wealth, and freedom.
Some of it is self-imposed, but the way society is today, it's by no means a shocker.

this is mostly driven by the spike in suicides by teenage boys, which is often attributed to the spike in opiods
also I question the reporting of suicides in the earlier decades, as suicide had a much harsher stigma back then
I would imagine that you are absolutely right

I don’t understand the whole under-reported suicide angle. A motherfricker is dead. There’s a body and everything. Funerals are held autopsies done. It’s not like you’re hiding an abortion or STD or alcoholism or some other stigmatized condition.

They’re growing up in an increasingly Godless, pitiless world devoid of love and fellowship.
Look, its tough to be a teenager/young person today because of social media. If they get bullied at school, they can't just go home, let it blow over then go back the next day. It stays with them after school, before they go to bed, before getting to school, etc.
IMO this is something that can be worked on. It takes the parents and others to help those who are bullied and to reach out to the jackasses who bully other kids.
There should be some type of social class (not social studies before someone says it). Some class in which these things are addressed. That people are killing themselves because of being bullied on social media. They need to be aware of this.
Parents need to be more proactive as well.
But I still can't buy into the "Godless, pitiless world devoid of love and fellowship" stuff. There are parts of this world where people live in "hell" every day. And many of them are people of faith, because that is pretty much all they have to hang on to.
And there have been worse times to live in..

You think kids are killing themselves because they're not whipped enough?

I'm not sure autopsies were always performed in past decades, and suicide is definitely stigmatized and something a lot of families would want to hide

Social media and terrible "breaking news!!" all the time is a cruel trick on the undeveloped mind.

They went to a school system that taught life shouldn't be very hard. And everyone that disagreed with them could be forced to accommodate them
Then they left school and quickly realized they had been lied to, and that no one had taught them any coping skills
So they just want to die. Or kill those that don't accommodate them
