The rate at which young Americans took their own lives reached a high-water mark in 2017, driven by a sharp rise in suicides among older teenage boys, according to new research.

In that year alone, suicide claimed the lives of 5,016 males and 1,225 females between 15 and 24 in the United States, researchers reported Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Assn.

While reporting standards for suicide have changed over the decades, the authors of the JAMA study said the youth suicide rate — 14.6 per 100,000 — appears to be the highest it’s been since the government began collecting such statistics in 1960.

Rest of the story here at LA Times website

I pity our young people. They’re growing up in an increasingly Godless, pitiless world devoid of love and fellowship. From the mass shooting that are happening at an increasing rate to the record number of suicide our society is in serious trouble.

The question now is what can be done to turn things around?

medicate kids with a belt when they act up. time to go old school. put the meds in the cabinet. it's our fault for molding them into wierdos and wimps.

Nothing a few hot adult teachers sleeping with teens couldn’t fix. Right?!

I mean, the teen mind can handle adult affairs and shite.

But it’s cool!!!!

Yeah it’s sad. We’ve watched two Datelines in the past week that involved teen suicide.

Both involved teens that were depressed and on serious meds and blamed not getting enough attention on social media. Sad

Look at what’s changed since 1960 and unchange it.

I did (the things that were within my & Mrs Füt’s* control).

Staying an intact nuclear family
Not moving every other year
Small town living
Best schooling available
Making/keeping kids engaged & holding them accountable

Nice gif, dragon.

I think that this the result of years of creating “victims” in everything we do. Climate, race, sexual orientation, etc., etc.

Victim hood = no control = no hope.

Seems like a logical progression.

Where is the equality?

Come on girls, get in the game.

But this does go to reiterate that there are differences in males and females. Males tend to use more lethal means when making a suicide attempt.

As for the psychological/societal cause of this...it can probably be traced back to multiple things, including the "war or boys" and social media.

Suicides per 100,000 people in 2016 (age standardized)

1 Guyana 46.6
2 Lesotho 22.7
3 Russia 48.3

We are way below the top 3.

this is mostly driven by the spike in suicides by teenage boys, which is often attributed to the spike in opiods

also I question the reporting of suicides in the earlier decades, as suicide had a much harsher stigma back then

I am pretty sure it coincides with the rise in social media. Kids are constantly judged online and there is no escape. Back in the day kids would get fricked with at school but could come home to a loving family(hopefully) and catch a break and then grow out of it. Now it’s constant and they are constantly seeing these unreal lifestyles of others.

Social media is the main cause. It’s a lot easier for kids to be bullied and picked on by a anonymous kids hiding behind a computer with zero accountability or vision to the impact of their actions.

Add false diagnosis, medication, and bad parenting into the mix and it’s a recipe for disaster.

The article didn’t say they’re the highest in the world. It said they’re the highest on record, as in more American teens and young adults are committing suicide now than at anytime in the past.

It's only going to get worse.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Thanks to social media the world is so much bigger to these kids and it makes them feel even less significant. As a teen in the 90s, I thought the outside world was just outside of my school district.

Social media. Instagram. Etc etc.

I tell my kids already that 99% of the things you see on social media is a lie. Someone has a filter. Someone is trying to paint a better picture of themselves than what’s behind that cell phone or status updates. Don’t try to keep up with something that doesn’t exist.

well...since 1960

Do you think there was a time prior to 1960 where the suicide rate was higher?

Well if you consider a countries population steadily increases over time you can expect other things to increase as well.

I think the spoiled kids along with the whole social media sites contribute the most to the increased death rate amongst this group.
