Maybe like 2% are illegal and they ain't driving the trucks

If they are driving a truck they probably work for the sugar mill and are H2B workers and get paid almost $20/hour

Farm workers are H2A and get paid $13.67 plus housing and a vehicle in LA in 2023

Go look in the paper and on job finding platforms and you will see as mandated by the gov ads asking for Americans to come work these jobs at the same pay and then go ask farmers how many inquires they get

All those candy canes and baked Christmas goods require a lot of sugar

You’re bitching about people who are working on a holiday (yeah, you’re bitching) cause you- who was not working- had to suffer the inconvenience of their labor. Think about that.
And you’re traveling thru cane country. Anyone with any sense of awareness knows it’s grinding season. Yet you chose to travel thru it then bitch about it. It’s not anger. It’s disgust at your lack of awareness for anyone other than yourself.

Farmers don't like hiring Americans

That’s not true. It’s more that most Americans are too fat and lazy and unwilling to do farm work for what it pays

Legal guest workers because it is in between their two harvest per year in Central America. Farmers and mill owners cannot find willing workers here.

That’s what the local farmers tell me too. Migrant workers outperform their American counterparts by a wide margin. It’s not just about the wages.

Just imagine what it used to be like when the roads were filled with carts of whole cane pulled by tractors instead of Semis hauling billets.

You must be a young one.

The grind doesn't stop.

This. And the with the recent freeze, there were lots of farmers cutting their cane before the freeze hit and so that's a lot cane that needed hauling.

Interestingly enough, I actually got a behind the scenes tour of a sugar mill yesterday from a buddy that works at one. It was pretty damn interesting. Those guys working the mill do not have an easy job.

Believe it or not not everyone knows everything. Some think they do. I asked a question because I did not know. Why would I know the sugarcane processing procedures??
Anyway, thanks to those who answered with the reason. I have been enlightened.

So once the mill is cranked up it’s a 24hr process till season is done? I’m ignorant on this process.

Basically yes. The mills do not stop until there isn't any more sugar cane to run through them. My brother contracts to a few different sugar companies. His company oversees export of raw sugar onto ships at different ports in LA and Florida. You don't really understand the enormity of it all until you see a massive warehouse with raw sugar piled 50-60' high.
