The irony is you're likely arguing with guys who are told if they want their job, they have to wear eye protection, steel toes, FR and hard hats or they can't enter the workspace.
You know, for their protection...

why in the world would any school be having prom right now
Because kids want to have fun?

why would you let your kid go?
Because the mortality rate for the age range of 12-25 is basically 0

we see the same issues across the world so there is a real issue that we (as in the world) have to deal with
quote:You are confusing rates with totals. The rate is 0.3%. That's nothing.
we are seeing high death rates across the world
quote:Not excess deaths. People who would die anyway.
that's still roughly 70k deaths
quote:Well, it's not. So no. Now maybe if we've had 2000 people under the age of 25 die up to this point and 10x that of working age 25-45, we would need to take some precautions... oh wait. That's what happened during 2009's swine flu and we didn't do shite because it wasn't an election year.
you don't think that's a substantial virus causing substantial carnage?

So what is your solution? Anytime elderly people die of some illness that doesn't kill anyone else we shut the world down until that illness is gone?

This is the sort of asshattery that will lead to civil suits. I certainly don’t subscribe to the thought that we should all be sheltering in place and wearing hazmat suits when we must be in public, but on the other hand, we do each have a responsibility to those around us to not be negligent.

what's actually HAPPENING, though is an incentive to increase covid case and death numbers.
What's actually happening is a 20% increase of funds for Medicare patients and a possible reimbursement for treating uninsured patients. Funding is determined on a hospital/state/region basis. It's possible that some hospitals are getting more than they would normally, but you're going to have to start backing your argument with a lot of definitive proof that hospitals are falsifying death records for funding. And not just one or two hospitals. You're claiming it's widespread so give us a plethora of examples.

Are you out of your mind? We're going to criminalize the flu? Because that's all this is - the flu.
not to the sky screamers. its sad to see so many people in such a small forum who are so afraid and seem to be convinced that they can avoid risks in life.

Why are libs allowed to make sweeping generalizations like this?

It's irrational to say "this a really serious problem we are going to be dealing with for two years, and my evidence is that 100k people died while we were first figuring out how to deal with the virus".
those are 2 separate issues
the virus is a serious problem shown by the 140k US deaths. this means we can't ignore it
the virus is likely going to be around a long time b/c of its nature. this means we have to figure out what we can do
quote:
If it is determined that the death rate over the June-August timeframe, for example, is in line with the seasonal flu, would it still make sense for us to treat this like the virus that ran through Italy in March?
what is the transmission rate?
again, this virus isn't very deadly, but the scary part is how easily transmitted it is.
Nipah or Ebola are a lot more scary than CV-19 in terms of direct contact, but they're infinitely less dangerous to the world in terms of pandemic. why? transmissability. you have to stop thinking about CV-19 in terms of just its mortality rate for this reason.
quote:
Because it's essentially a different virus if we know how to treat it and this greatly reduced its mortality.
we're doing better than in March but are still facing major numbers. i'd say now it's more like the flu in terms of direct lethality b/c we have gotten better at treating it. the transmission is still the crucial variable

i meant rates in terms of populations, not infections

Not excess deaths. People who would die anyway.
i cut it in half. that removes the excess deaths and those who would "die anyway".

i thought that only killed 12k people in the US (mostly older people who would have "died anyway" also)
*ETA: i had the last part about age wrong, but it still caused incredibly lower number of deaths

mean you do realize that even if we open up fully, we're going to likely face a global depression b/c of how everyone else responds, right?
Wouldn't you rather be ahead of the game then?
Shouldn't we be focusing on lessoning our dependence on the global economy rather than begging to be at its whims?

assuming everyone in the world gets the virus once, that's about 23M dead people. you don't think that's going to have effects?
No. I don't. Not in any globally meaningful way that justifies global depression.

You mean, like a sweeping generalization if one person loses an eye or has their toes crushed everyone will?
Shouldn't we all have the personal freedom to decide if we are safe or not? Where is personal responsibility and the ability to feed my family without the government and business telling me what to wear?

look at the economic projections across the board. i think most European countries are predicting a 5-8% GDP decrease (and that's on the back of government borrowing to keep things going). and we haven't even seen this start to really ravage poor countries. it will take a long time for them to get this under control and for the more developed world to even get accurate data.

Bruh are you seriously out here arguing that we should live in fear for years because there's a highly trasnsmittable flu strain going around? You should go to work for the governor.

I do. The stats for implementing of PPE in the workplace is much more convincing than any argument you can make for the shutdowns of the world economy due to COVID.

yes people are selfish arse holes who lack civic duty and responsibility. People don't want to suffer a minor inconvenience for the greater good. That has become abundantly clear in this whole thing
