Wonder what the opportunities would be for farming, cultivating? And how much one makes per acre from farming? It could be very lucrative for growers.

$300 million for the 5 or 6 illnesses our overlords deem worthy.

You mean legalize a $300m industry? The weed industry is already here. We could grow the industry and get $20 or $30 million out of it in extra tax revenue.

ETA: never mind. The state won't get that much from medical MJ. Maybe a few million. Not that it should matter.

yea and rec. pot is a multi billion dollar industry. then there is hemp which would be its own separate billion dollar industry.

Then there are the herbs that are cousins to cannabis. Same effects, less expensive and internationally legal. ...but still profits millions.

True.

The study, backed by the Louisiana Cannabis Association in conjunction with the Colorado-based Marijuana Policy Group,
Safe to say that's probably NOT an unbiased organization.

Whenever one sees a study like this touting the financial windfall the state will reap by legalizing pot, everyone always assumes that once MJ becomes legalized (or at least more easily obtained for "medical" uses), all the pot being bought illegally will now be bought legally. If legalized, pot bought through legal channels would probably be more expensive than pot bought through illegal channels. The legal pot will be more expensive because of state and federal taxes in addition to the usual additional business expenses. Under the current law, pot smokers are already breaking the law. Why would they suddenly want to buy pot legally at the expense of paying more money? No, if legalized, the revenue generated for the state would be much less than reported because a lot of sales would remain "off the radar" and untaxed. The study also assumes that very few who have the cited medical conditions are using pot because it's illegal. OTOH, what if they're already smoking pot illegally for their medical condition?

Would this

even be profitable if the medical marijuana didn't provide the THC high?

I think if we're honest, those of you claiming all the great benefits of MJ really just want to continue your vices legally, it genuinely has nothing to do with the medical benefits.

FWIW- if you think it's so important, there's some great places to move out west and you won't be missed here.

Do you drink or smoke? I don't partake in marijuana but why choose THAT to be the illegal vice. Etoh, tobacco, trans fats and high fructose corn syrup cause far more detriment. Health care costs in this country soar thanks to those vices...either all should be illegal or none. Who makes the call on the morality of each vice?

You are making a massive assumption with this post. An ignorant assumption at that. Ignorant to the fact that states where marijuana is legalized are reaping the benefits of millions and millions of dollars. This is a fact. It is happening. So your theory has absolutely no basis.

Maybe, maybe not. Instead of just claiming my theory is ignorant, I'm open to hearing your counter argument.

The article you linked reports only the gross revenues of WA state related to legal sales of recreational mj. Of course, this thread was started on the premise of broadening legal sales of medical mj in LA. Including the article you linked, no one reports, or tries to analyze, how much additional money the state spends on pot use; no one analyzes the state's net profit. In addition, the article does not address how much pot sales remain off the radar and untaxed. It'll be interesting to see in a few years the overall effects legalized mj sales, not just gross profits for the state; maybe those states will have profited a gazillion dollars w/o any additional expenses; or maybe their unreported net profit will be less than the reported gross profit because of having to spend additional money related to social issues. It'd be interesting to see a report analyzing both sides of the financial issue. Are you aware of one?
