I got spanked as a kid, it just made me hate my father and fantasize about one day being old and strong enough to kill him.

I love my dad now, but I would never advocate spanking now, as all it did was cause me anguish. It never taught me right from wrong. It just taught me that I had to submit to my parents' will and to deceive them if I wanted to do what I wanted.

I never had disciplinary problems, by the way. I was always a good kid in school and in public. But between the shite I took from kids at school and the shite I'd take going home to my parents, there were dark times around middle school where I certainly contemplated Chester Benningtoning myself. Of course people here will romanticize child abuse, so let the downvotes commence.

if learning to respect authority and becoming a law abiding citizen is considered mentally ill then I guess my kids and I are mentally ill.

There's a time and place for each form of discipline, but a 4-5 year old likely won't be able to form the connection between the bad behavior and the missed activity. They can however very quickly associate a burnt arse with what they did wrong.

In my experience a whoopin can also teach strength, and it damn sure taught us to fear and respect the old man.

So many posters ignoring valid research. I guess if you're too lazy to parent effectively, you are also going to be too lazy to research more effective ways to discipline.
