Parents not actually parenting is what's wrong with the youth.

Just smacking a kid won't teach him anything.

I got spanked as a kid, it just made me hate my father and fantasize about one day being old and strong enough to kill him.

I love my dad now, but I would never advocate spanking now, as all it did was cause me anguish. It never taught me right from wrong. It just taught me that I had to submit to my parents' will and to deceive them if I wanted to do what I wanted.

I never had disciplinary problems, by the way. I was always a good kid in school and in public. But between the shite I took from kids at school and the shite I'd take going home to my parents, there were dark times around middle school where I certainly contemplated Chester Benningtoning myself. Of course people here will romanticize child abuse, so let the downvotes commence.

if learning to respect authority and becoming a law abiding citizen is considered mentally ill then I guess my kids and I are mentally ill.

How about this novel idea: Parents raise your kids the way you want to raise them. Other people, butt out of other parent's lives. As long as you're in the child's life and don't cross any lines (physically or emotionally), who cares how you discipline your kids.

FWIW, most of you are raising inconsiderate pricks anyways

Can't fix stupid.

I thank my parents for whipping me, because kids 13 and younger have hardly no reasoning. For instance, I remember being 5 or 6 and not wanting to run in the street because I'd get my butt whipped, not because I knew a car could come flying down the road and end my life. One instance of many.

I spanked my oldest at a young age. Now I don't like to spank him unless he does something they really deserves it. He won't remember most of them from before age 5 anyway. It's all about teaching a lesson. If spanning achieves that great, but sometimes it doesn't work and you have to reach them a different way. One time my son visibly saw how disappointed I was in him and that was enough to get through to him. Each of my kids are different though in how you get through to them. But more kids need to be spanked and yelled at.

Personally I think it's lazy and mostly ineffective and this is coming from someone who got the belt at home and the paddle at school.

You want to talk about effective? Hold me out of a sports game and make me go explain to the whole team and coaches why I let them down and couldn't participate.

There's a time and place for each form of discipline, but a 4-5 year old likely won't be able to form the connection between the bad behavior and the missed activity. They can however very quickly associate a burnt arse with what they did wrong.

In my experience a whoopin can also teach strength, and it damn sure taught us to fear and respect the old man.

That's why spankings aren't meant for older kids

So many posters ignoring valid research. I guess if you're too lazy to parent effectively, you are also going to be too lazy to research more effective ways to discipline.

You are advocating bare bottom spanking a 4 year old? Why the frick would you spank a kid that young when likely they can't even wipe their own arse. Wtf...ok Adrienne Peterson.

I understand a swat or quick tap especially when dealing with safety issues like outlets and fire but "burnt arse"? Come on
